I like it. Going flat was a good decision. Thankfully, a lot of audio plugins and software is moving away from trying to emulate the look and feel of physical hardware (my all-time favorite being the Valhalla series of reverbs and delays).
More or less, yes. There are so many things that can only be described in code. The trick is to make that code accessible and manageable for people not well-versed in it.
While an interesting breakdown, I feel it elegantly ignores the biggest aspect of making an app "like Spotify", which is not the app itself at all, but rather the global licensing and marketing challenges. Spotify, as with all music streaming apps (of which there are few now), does not make money after all.
Not to be "that guy", but why is this on Designer News?

Definitely desktop first, but then again, we make desktop software, so. :) While a lot of software is moving to the browser, app development software is still firmly fixed in the realm of ye'olde desktop computers. :)
Ugh. A link to a Storify site that links onwards to an "article" that makes little sense? Sorry if that's perceived as being mean, but this looks like it was posted by someone who doesn't know (or care) what DN is.

No. And this "article" is an affront to good writing — heck, even any remote value. What is this, for example:
I mean, jesus. :( Look: I get it — someone probably told you to "Post on DN to get some traffic!", but please understand how that doesn't exactly work in your favor. All stuff like this does is make others annoyed, sorry.
