The community profile view is due for a refresh :)

But the right slider is because we're a conversation platform where it's natural to be a part of many ongoing conversations at one time. Before we had the slider you had to go in and out of these fullscreen views to see the thread content, which felt super sluggish and high friction. The slider is an intermediary step to make it feel faster to "peek" into the thread, leave a message, and then escape back to your previous context.

The signed-in home view is a better experience, where it behaves more like an inbox for all your conversations across the communities you've joined.
