Well, it really looks like a ripoff of Unsplash, or at least they must have been strongly inspired by it:

No problem, I can't wait to rebuild my site with your article in mind. :)
Edit: I only wanted to write a simple hashtag:massagethursdays but forgot markdown would make me yell it instead.
Well, I'm sure the stakeholders don't wake up in the morning thinking: "Today, I'm going to prevent my design team to have access to the tools they need, mouhhaahahahah".
It is more likely they don't understand the benefit of paying this extra tool for their designers. 100% of it is ignorance, and it falls on the designer to convince whoever decides that it's going to be beneficial.
On the other hand, if a designer has to go out of his way to convince anyone of anything — all the time... there might be fundamental problems indeed.
Drake mode all the way.
Frankly, they look really similar.
Also, SourceTree is not GitHub only, and is completely free.
So how is Git Tower fantastic and not SourceTree?
This will revolutionize gaming in a couple of years.
I disagree.
While the proposed Y-meter might not be a good solution, it does highlight which article in the list is rising or has more points, unlike the current Hacker News design.
Now while simply using the points numbers themselves would easily solve this, I think it's still a nice attempt at trying to invent new visual systems, which is something I personally rarely see in the current web UI trends.

Have feedback?
My thoughts exactly.
I think there should have been a little more thought into measuring and putting actual sizes that fit more standard watch sizes.
For example, I like my watches at 38mm to 42mm... But then again, you'd design the UI differently, as others have mentioned.
