I completely agree! On-site projects are great to understand a candidate's process, attention to detail, methods, etc. Giving complex homework (especially having to do with that company's project) is essentially asking for free design work / ideas.
They wanted to talk to you about working for them and farming new ideas off of you with the hope of getting hired is not very good practice. Like Kyle said, "walk the opposite direction".
I use a project called imageoptim-CLI, which takes your images, compares different combinations of optimizations, and selects the one with the greatest file savings. I have found that imageOptim does a fantastic job on its own, but in combination with another tool, the file savings can be quite significant.

It is unfortunately a very real threat that can take many different forms. I also always use a VPN because I don't want to risk anything.
Here is an article that is a good starting point to research further: http://go.authentic8.com/blog/stealing-data-over-wifi-is-easier-than-you-think
If you do decide to go with a VPN I recommend you read this article on torrentfreak. They list a fair number of the services out there and how serious they take your privacy.

For batch resizing I use a photoshop script I found a while back called Picture Processor. It's fantastic for resizing, compressing, running actions and saving out for web on a group of images. It doesn't look pretty at all, but it gets the job done.
Hint: Go to the sixth page of the forum to get the most updated script.

Glad to see Flexbox is getting some realworld use out there! Very well done in that regard. Personally though, that blue just hurts my eyes. Maybe it's because I haven't finished my first coffee yet, but it's hard to focus on the work because the background color takes so much attention.
