The most important thing I learned was how to sell my work, justify quotes, and receive proper feedback. All the communication parts. Prior to being self-employed I always had someone else doing that, either the CD or PM or some salesy person doing all the client liaisons. I could just put music on and "work" all day. Learning how to do that, on the fly, when my rent counts on it, took me a while to feel like I was doing an ok job at it. Being able to sell yourself confidently, collaborate, and steer conversations to get valuable feedback is insanely important.
Also, working out of your living room every day makes your living room suck during non-work time...
Thanks. I just read Shawn's post.
Anyone know how long of a project this was? Were the four designers on the team working full-time on it? I'm always curious about how the work breaks down on big projects like this.
That's awesome Bryn! Sounds like it's working well for you.
Do you actually use it for communicating with the rest of the team and giving/receiving feedback or more as a shared mood board?
Ah interesting. I don't think I've seen this one. Have you used it?
Magazine: Can a person turn the pages? Can a person read the words? Done.
Online Magazine: Can a person figure out how to find an article they're looking for? How legible is this on an insufferable amount of devices? Should we have a stand alone app? How easy will this be to update in the future? Damn, look at these bugs.
That said, I'm sure there're plenty of startups who only have a single designer doing all four roles you mention.
That's an interesting way of keeping everyone in the company connected. How's that working out for you?
We're still interviewing UI designers at DreamHost. Preferably in Portland or LA but 100% remote is fine for the right person.
Feel free to get at me by email or on Twitter for more info.

I'm also very interested for versioning support. That's a feature of Brand.ai that I really like.
An example, when a company goes through a brand update, a lot of the library will probably change. If a designer is working on a product feature at the same time, having to update their design midway through their process becomes a workflow challenge. It would be better to let them decide when to do that on their own terms to not pull out of the flow.
Also, if the version is document-dependent, we'd still have artifacts of exactly what the design spec was at the time.
