I'm curious too. I hardly know anyone using LESS anymore and have moved on to using Sass(scss).

I'm surprised there's no sticky header... (yet?)
Looks like it's using HTML5 canvas and a few JavaScript plugins. Source of the JavaScript: JS file
For images, there are usually 4 options to use, each with their own caveats.
JPEG: Best to use for images with lots of colors, gradients, shadows, or images such as photographs.
PNG: Best to use for images that have solid colors and images that require transparency.
GIFs: Best to use with images that require a short animation, though be careful with GIFs that are large in filesize.
SVG: Best for use to scale images, such as logos. Usually images that have solid colors.
Also, it's best to use image compression to reduce the filesize on your images. My favorite service is https://compressor.io/. There is also https://tinypng.com/ for png images.
You want to keep image file sizes as low as possible while still keeping acceptable image quality.
