More importantly, is there a reason that for each image for comparison of jpeg, gif and png are all displayed as PNGs on this page? That will alter any image results massively surely?

Books

Start here. Books take longer to absorb. Start with a few books to get an idea of the basics:

1. Typography. It's very important to get a firm understanding of typography and styling of text, because, even today, at least 70% of the web is text. Fot that, I'd recommend The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst.
2. Basic design principles. The Elements of Graphic Design: Space, Unity, Page Architecture, and Type by Alexander W. White
3. User experience. Don't Make Me Think by Steve Krug
4. HTML&CSS. It isn't very hard to grasp the basics of these 2. Here's a nice book: HTML and CSS: Design and Build Websites: Jon Duckett or just go to https://www.codecademy.com/ and learn there.

Online courses

Then dive into online courses. They are usually focused on one topic in more depth:
