Huh. I've been thinking about trying to build a few different products that are quite similar/could work well in tandem with Finch. I'd love to check it out and discuss!
I disagree completely—design most definitely always matters. Now, whether or not it is the most important aspect depends on the product.
I'm interested to hear what aspects you feel Rdio is over-designed, if you wouldn't mind elaborating. The design is pretty paired down which allows the focus to be on the music, which is how it should be IMO.
That website nailed it. Knowing how to design things that other engineers can build quickly and semantically—with as little code bloat as possible—is really just inefficient.
Having the ability to code an idea for some stupid little web app that I have would just be irresponsible. Rather, I should be focused on being a good listener and investigator, and honing my craft. Let's not forget about how ridiculous it would be to design with code, can you imagine how much time would be wasted if I could easily prototype native animations or layouts?
God-forbid I become too valuable to my clients. Imagine how ridiculous it would be if they'd only have to pay one person to design and code.
Actually I take that back. I'll keep coding.
Interesting that you've taken every website into consideration prior to forming your opinion.

I read your comment before I saw it was you, and was like, "this sounds like Alec S."
Kind of strange that they are only crediting the photographers with their first name and last initial. My friend Julian Bialowas had his photo used on a billboard right off the freeway in SF.
Dustin! I spent a lot of time working on this when I was at OT. The mobile site that's up now has been around for a while, but I wouldn't expect to see it around for very long. Holler at me if you want to chat more about it :)

Wow this is awesome. Perfect timing too, as I'm working on launching a super content-heavy blog/digital publication, and hadn't even started thinking about multi-channel distribution. I have a few more in-depth questions, do you have an email I could send a few detailed questions to?
