Also codepen is great. Really easy to try out ideas without any javascript fatigue™. Have some pretty animations and interactions on there as well.

Couldn't agree more. Rewriting native interactions breaks a lot of user expectations and results in frustration. But it can be done right.
A while back I was researching all the possible solutions and libraries, ended up building my own prototype.
