One approach you could take is to look in to a 60% mechanical keyboard. Many of these smaller boards allow you to have multiple function layers, where you can bind different key mappings.

So you could have layer one be your traditional keyboard layout and layer 2 be your design layout with all the shortcut keys you need arranged in a logical fashion for you.

If you are on a Mac you can use the system settings to make sure the Command, Option, and Control keys are where you would expect them to be (since most mechanical keyboards are programed for PCs).

OLED displays use more power when more pixels are lit, and when pixels are brighter. They don’t care if the pixels represent a rich mahogany desk, or a sleek, minimal typography-only design.

Isn't that part of what Hockenberry was getting at? Rendering lush textures and bevelled buttons would require more pixels to be activated, which would drain the battery faster than a flatter design that only turned on pixels for information.
