I agree with everything you wrote, and I also never wrote that hamburger menus are a good pattern. I just questioned the statement that we are moving away from them.

    Moving away from hamburger menus?

I'm no fan of them but if anything I'd say the use is increasing since it's becoming more and more of a standard on mobile, designers can justify using it with arguments like "People know what it is for because they see them in so many apps/websites"

Wow, did not know you could do #7! Am currently building a component library for our team and had problems with too many unnecessary overrides being enabled. Thanks!

    Great write-up Joel!

I recently joined a company that practices Scrum and agile development, and it has changed how I look at software design/development. I almost exclusively work on features in parallel with our developers, and they all go live. We work in tiny increments, which means we will release each of those increments and see what happens. Did it have the effect we'd hoped? If not, we evaluate why and either kill the feature or make it better. If yes, we keep improving on this feature until it is no longer worth the effort. This means that we never have months of work that goes untested on the assumption that it will solve the problem we have.

I'm thinking about writing a piece on working in a cross-functional agile team as a designer, I think a lot of us are still struggling with the waterfall methods that burden our industry.

Doesn't that touch screen look very unresponsive, or alternatively that the touch areas are way too small? They kept missing the buttons/menu items in the video.

  • Posted to Can we do something about all these adverts posed as posts?, Sep 08, 2017

I believe the problem is that these posts float to the top so easily. Any post with 3 upvotes in an hour or 2 (easy to get a few friends/coworkers to vote for your post) is going to be ranked in the top 5.

I don't think we'll ever get rid of these posts, and the solution is to make them less discoverable. I wrote about this yesterday here: https://www.designernews.co/stories/87276-is-the-dn-algorithm-placing-too-much-value-on-time
