  • Posted to UX Designer: Is a proper portfolio really necessary?, Jan 24, 2017

I think what everyone else here has said is very good. The things that people are going to be looking for in a portfolio will vary a little from company to company, but I think showing process is key.

I like to walk people through recent projects rather than just sending them a formal case study. This works well for freelance or smaller companies, but you won't always get this opportunity if you're talking to a bigger organization.

This is wonderful! I've struggled with creating a portfolio for myself because it's difficult to convey product design work with static mockups alone. I haven't had the time or patients to go through my own work and document it like you have here.

I'm feeling inspired now, so maybe I'll try to find the time to get something together :D

Since I mostly do mobile design, I like using a Retina display, so I've just learned to use my 15" screen. The 27" Retina iMac is a true joy, but as a freelancer, I haven't been able to justify having one just for home use.

I think the MacBook Pro will soon or already can support an external 5k screen. I seriously hope Apple is working on one. It seems crazy to spend nearly the same price as a new retina iMac for a Dell 5K.

Nope. Using Twitter can be helpful for this if you don't know anyone at the company. Like others have said here, definitely show them that you're interested in the product, but don't go crazy and write them a novel.

LOL. At least this unsolicited redesigned doesn't totally remove the ads like most of them do.

Good URL. Didn't even know that one existed.

You should totally do this. We also need to get Designer Debate Club going again in NYC since Keenan moved out West.

  • Posted to Ask DN: Designers, what is your sketch book of choice? , Jul 25, 2014

http://dotgrid.co This is the best I've ever used but it's too expensive if you live outside of the UK due to shipping.

The Behance Dot Grid Book is pretty awesome, but kind of large and the paper is soft so some pens (fountain pens) bleed.

Currently I'm using two notebooks from Muji: a Dot Grid and a plain notebook.
