  • Posted to Vancouver’s great creative exodus, Dec 14, 2015

My view of Vancouver is a mix of "this place is so awesome" and "who the fuck can afford to live here?!?"I have seen a lot of my friends move to Vancouver, not just for design, but for music, film or other creative pursuits. It's a hard life when you need to make so much money to just stay housed.

I recently paid off my mortgage and am free and clear. It's hard to meet incredible creatives from Vancouver who are my age and either still renting an apartment or paying too much for a townhouse mortgage. Breaks my heart to see those struggles.

Every city has its troubles, though. My city is far from perfect and though it's fairly cheap to live, work has shriveled as oil has dropped. It's not a struggle to find work, but there can be lean months. In the end, you have to figure out what you value and make choices around those values.

This makes me uncomfortable, but also very happy.

    So good!

I have long maintained that Karim Rashid is just a Sacha Baron Cohen character.

  • Posted to Stop Using LinkedIn, Feb 13, 2015

I really do dislike LinkedIn, but the difference between it and the alternates that this site lists is that it's not industry limited. I understand the value of networking with other designers to grow my skills or talk shop but I'm not looking for other designers to hire me.

Further to that, not everyone who wants to hire designers is as savvy as you'd hope but that doesn't mean they don't need good design (or have the money to pay for it). Those people are much more likely to be searching on LinkedIn rather than Dribbble, which in the greater perspective is invisible to the public.

    …but I still hate LinkedIn.

  • Posted to Is Design Bound to Get Cheaper?, Feb 13, 2015

It's good to see design getting cheaper because it can empower the people who can't afford to drop thousands into a website or an app.

Even if cheaper sources are available, this won't stop some clients from paying for high-end output. It all depends on if a client values unique design or affordable design.

Companies making expensive clothing don't sweat the fact that H&M/Target/Walmart sells similar clothes for a fraction of the cost.
