Where the design community meets.
Hey Guilherme,
I'm a researcher at an FI and I was wondering if you could shed some light into how some of the interviews/feedback was obtained as you worked through the physical prototyping phase. Moving from digital products to physical isn't as straightforward as I hoped!
Thanks so much for the insight Stu, I'd seen that "Painting with code" article, and totally forgot about it.
Our org may not be totally equipped to do that, but knowing how one org does this helps us understand where we should be striving for.
the biggest struggle I've had with any system or style component is alignment with development and developing a single source of truth.
What is your 'single source of truth'? and how did you iterate upon that? Is an iteration upon this source expected to affect all contexts that it's used in?
Curious: how did you involve developers and how were the iterations done?
I'm super curious about design systems that are iterated internally (ie. design team only) compared to how teams handle iterating upon a component that may be out in the wild already.
really good to hear. the resell has been all over the place...
i know they said it was a one time thing, but i imagine demand has been crazy
Testing...
Not sure if this will show up, but
Under the new stewardship, do we really need the real, full name policy?
(I consider this a core difference in opinion and don't really want to open up a huge debate about this)
I'd argue that Medium's response is the responsible thing to do.
Agree.
In principal, I'd imagine there's a weird challenge in trying to maintain a DNT request for a user that's logging in to a creation/consumption site.
It seems like tracking is fundamental when you're running a service like this. Upon some more thinking, I realized I wasn't 100% sure on the exact implications of what a DNT header meant and a quick glance at Wikipedia acknowledges ambiguity in what it exactly means as well.
Assuming the picture isn't enlarged in anyway, it seems like a very reasonable disclosure. Based on my current knowledge of the issues, I think it's very responsible as well. It'd be a completely separate issue if they weren't honouring DNT on a regular Medium article you've opened without being logged in.

Have feedback?
There are more than a few designers writing very thoughtful pieces on this topic, but most blogs are too short or just lack the depth entirely to thoughtfully discuss it. They are also quite academic in nature, so they don't get the eyeballs they deserve.
HCD/UCD and "Anthropological Design," as I've seen it described, represent the dominant design approaches/values. My guess is that HCD/USD are just such 'compelling' ideas, not much critical thought is given to what it actually means or why you shouldn't or should adopt it. Many other frameworks exist that can complement or contrast it, such as Ecological Design or even "Systems Thinking" ... it'd be great to see more discussion around the merit of these approaches.
