I freelanced as a photographer a few years back. My recommendation would be to get her to buy an entry-level dSLR of some sort and just start shooting. She can read all she wants, but the only way to really learn composition and develop a look is to shoot, and browse other people's photography. The reading and research come later.

Not only designers, though. Tons of people on here also develop, or run shops that need more design muscle.

Eh? This article is from 2008… three years before Gallagher's normalize.css was released, and really only applies to CSS resets, which normalize is not. You should give normalize.css a shot, it's great.
