Figma is quite new, but does practically everything that Sketch does, except in the browser. I made the switch.

    Why not?

It's a flexible solution that works with multiple font and background colors.

Can you enlighten us lowly junior designers on what exactly the hierarchical disaster here is?

Every. Damn. Time. The new version is a lifesaver to me.

Are you serious? Women represent 50% of the world's population, we're not talking about some crazy edge case here. Thanks for comparing us to children and obese people.

  • Posted to Ask DN: Which books are you reading currently?, Jul 28, 2015

To be honest, since graduating from university I've been terrible at reading design books. I find I get much more of a kick out of reading fiction and non-fiction from different industries. I'm currently making my way through these two:

    • The Second Sex — Simone de Beauvoir: Gettin' my feminism history on. Just a hundred pages in, but finding it extremely interesting so far. A lot of the psychoanalysis is fairly outdated (it's from 1949), but I'm surprised by how many of her observations are relevant and relatable even in today's debates around women in tech.

    • Ham on Rye — Charlies Bukowski: Could Bukowski be any more different from Beauvoir? I've always been a huge fan of his poetry, so it's about time I get through his novels.

  • Posted to Ask DN: Would you design at Facebook?, in reply to Denis Rojcyk , May 06, 2015

Totally agreed there are huge differences to the freedom of freelance vs working at a big company, but thought I'd try and be open about how Design works at Facebook as well. :)

You're right there's always risk working on something that doesn't ship, but fortunately we don't have a culture of "iterating on one icon or one app view and fight with other teams working on the same thing". Designers have clear ownership over individual products or features, and while you're expected to communicate with other teams and defend the best user experience, teams aren't pitted against each other.

Personally I've been the sole designer working on Facebook at Work for the last 10 months, responsible for visual design, user experience, planning and executing new features, onboarding flows, app store & marketing assets, etc — across WWW, iOS and Android. Call it drinking kool-aid, but I feel I've got more than enough responsibility and creative freedom to make a difference!

The way I see it, the bus system in London is actually reasonably clean, pleasant-smelling, frequent and on-time, as-is. It's also such a large and spread-out city that designing routes that serve a big enough chunk of the demographic sounds incredibly difficult, even with the destination being the same. (City/Canary Wharf workers?)

The biggest reason why this has potential in SF isn't because it's a bus with coffee/snacks, but because Muni is completely disregarded as even being a transportation option by many upper-middle-class San Franciscans. I don't really see the same thing here in London.

  • Posted to Ask DN: Designers, what's your favorite album cover design?, Feb 20, 2015

In an Aeroplane Over the Sea

    Velvet Underground

Joyce Manor (Just look at that face!)

Nana Grizol (Something about this album cover just is so sweet and encapsulates the album incredibly well.)

Yeah, the crowd sourced salaries seemed really exaggerated to me.

I got way more points once I just started rating everyone at $100k than when I was trying to accurately predict their salary based on position, experience and the company.
