Suitcase Fusion 7 has been surprisingly solid for me so far (I was on a similar search the past few months after getting sick of Font Explorer X).

    Pros

    • It is pretty fast and fairly lightweight (about a 135MB memory footprint) with my library of almost 5k total fonts (though only a few hundred activated, system fonts included).
    • Previewing type is fast enough with a pretty large library.
    • The auto-activation for Adobe CS works well.
    • It connects with Typekit to manage your synced library from there.
    • It connects to Google Web Fonts for desktop activation and use.
    • It's pretty easy to organize with sets and sub-sets.
    • It has per-user licensing for up to 2 machines (I think that's the limit), and it has a cloud font storage thing included for free.

    Cons

    • No auto-activation for Sketch or Affinity.
    • You can't create subsets within Google Web Fonts or Typekit.
    • More expensive than Rightfont (but with RIghtfont you only get 1 computer per license).

Rightfont wasn't bad during my trial, but I went with Fusion mostly because of the licensing with many other features being equal. It has been solid so far. Worth a trial at least.

Give Dropmark a look. It has team plan, a nice simple desktop app, and browser extensions.

The organization functions are nice too.

I think the point in designing at 1x is for scaling designs up to 2x and 3x, not necessarily in supporting 1x devices (though if you need to, that's also a benefit). Sure, 1x devices may be dead soon, but 3x devices have a long life ahead. And what if we're at 5x in 5 years?

It's much better to start at 1x and scale 200% and 300% for 2x and 3x respectively than it is to start at 2x and scale at 150% to get to 3x.

    Awesome writeup.

How long was this entire process? (Sorry if I missed the mention of it.)

  • Posted to Ask DN: Tool that combines personal finance AND freelance time-tracking and invoicing?, Feb 14, 2014

It might not have the kinds of budgeting tools you're looking for, but give Wave a look https://www.waveapps.com/

You can add multiple accounts too and switch between personal and business data.

I've used it for freelance accounting and it's been pretty solid.

Yeah, the important point is that they are acquiring the team that built Mixel. Not the app itself. I doubt Etsy gives a crap about that silly app.

If your an in-demand talent like Khoi, others, why take a salary for a measly six figures (and pay income tax) when you can start an inconsequential company, get funded by one of your buddies, then get acquired by one of your buddies buddies for seven figures and only pay capital gains tax. /curmudgeonry

  • Posted to Which blogging platform should I use? Jekyll or Scriptogram?, in reply to Brandon Iffert , Jan 22, 2013

I recommend Middleman as well. It is really well put together, good docs too. Just a real nice piece of software to use for sites of all kinds.

The caveat you'll often hear is that was that it wasn't designed specifically around blogging (like Jekyll), so as Brandon said, it does require a blogging extension. So you'll have to spend an extra 5 seconds of setup.

This hasn't been mentioned yet, but I think the Phoenix theme is great overall (both the UI theme and syntax color schemes):

I switched from Soda (which is great too) to this and it's a bit tighter overall. Worth checking out.
