I think using an easing method to get back to the top is great so that the user isn't jarred, but this was way too slow.

I completely agree with you. If I was hiring manager at Slack, I would throw this one in the cuckoo bin. There's a fine line between putting in some work and making something cool to get noticed by a company... and coming off as obsessive and crazy.
