I'd echo a bunch of the comments here. I also suggest diving in and trying to code an interface such as GMail. I've always found that I learned more by coding and running into roadblocks vs going through a course.

It happens quite a bit. Especially when teams don't have much clarity over 'what they need'. At larger organizations you'll often find that they'll evaluate the position (whether you fit for X or Y) but also where you fit along the org structure spectrum (senior, junior, etc.). There are other factors such as cultural fit, who interviewed you and their perception, etc.

You're expectations can never be too high. Titles, and roles vary greatly between organizations. My suggestion would be to keep on applying for positions where you truly want to work on their product or within their organization. In the end, where you fall along the spectrum doesn't matter much.

I wouldn't try to explicitly avoid what happened. Even once you're in an organization your title and role can change a lot. Don't get discouraged. Keep at it and Good luck!

One subtle microinteraction I love is transitioning between views in iOS settings.

Go to Settings tap General then tap Back

For a split second the 'General' table cell is highlighted grey when you return to the Settings view. This gives a user a sense of orientation.
