i worked in a samsung evo 480 (500 gb) into my late 2009 27-inch iMac just about 2 weeks ago. it's a tricky process cracking into the machine (you need suction cups, patience and someone to help you hold things) and will need to remove the original drive inside. that said, it was highly worth it. you should double your ram (that install is much easier to access), if you are working on large documents. upgrading both should breathe new life into your machine.
