This is exactly what I've been looking for, and is beautifully done!
For a second there I thought Behance had introduced a Twitch competitor. :o
Keeping the canvas also allows you to shift the icon around so that it's visually centered. For example, a ▶ will need to be shifted to the right slightly to appear as if it's in the middle.
What resources are you using the learn?
I signed in to Designer News for the first time in months to upvote this. Love it.
I find a 1px grid gives the most flexibility.

When I first saw this image I thought they had created an online tool for testing font combinations. Turns out it's Photoshop side-by-side with the Typekit website. Too bad. Especially for fonts that can't be synced locally, it's a real pain to have to add them to a kit, publish, and use in code to test out font combinations.
