FYI on Chrome Notifications: if you're running latest version (I'm on 43.0.xx—I don't know when they added this), you can choose to hide the Notifications icon by going to the menu item "Chrome -> Hide Notifications" — it worked like a charm for me!
I agree with this wholeheartedly. When I'm finished with work, I like to turn off all screens and read a magazine. It's refreshing to look at what's possible in layout/design when you're not limited to screen sizes. Now, the only thing we need to do is work magic and turn that into the same experience for a myriad of devices. :-/

I thought I'd just link to this question on stack exchange because it made me smile as I've had similar questions when working with clients. But in truth, clients who aren't dealing with design regularly shouldn't NEED to know these details—that's what they hire us for.
