In time most images won't have text on them, so the whole bleed thing / stretching will phase out. Any other thoughts are super welcome here

I should start by saying I'm a developer not a designer :p, but I see what you're saying with the too much stuff going on. Might trim this a bit and "neutralize" the contrasting colors.

The image thing is a real struggle. A long time ago (for whatever reasons) we have these huge banner images with text on them. It makes it really hard to use these. I think after reading some of the feebdback we'll phase out the "image tile" component where it uses these as the bg image (for now).

I also was very heavily inspired by Next Web...

Lastly, we redesign it every 6-12 months for fun. :)
