I have moral reservations against ads used in that manner, dark patterns and all. Adverts should be clearly distinguishable as adverts. But I digress.
How about a strong block colour that matches the visual identity of the rest of the site?
Adverts should stick out, so I'd have no issue with them not flowing into content. Duplicate the ad, upscale it to fill the space and slap a blur on the element? Would keep the colour scheme and add a decent background to it all.
You don't need to take over the market, success depends on what you define as such. This could work grand if it was opinionated or highly curated against some sort of submission criteria.
Here's an idea, ask the agency.
Would agree, it was very fluffy.
Critiques don't have to offer a solution.
Good luck. Layervault have been cracking down on dissenting opinions lately. I myself am shadow banned with nally a reply or reason when I enquired. Justified with their business I suppose.
Hi I'm advertising, nice to meet you.

Look, you can call this what you want but at the end of the day you're doing work and not being compensated. You don't have the necessary materials at hand to complete your job. You push back and request the mobile layout and call it a night. If they want you to design a mobile layout, you say that is not in the scope but I'd be happy to do it. It will be $x. You need to get better at seeing ahead. I don't touch a lick of code until all these things are worked out. Keep pushing back until you can do your job. It's more professional and easier on you.
