It seems like they are masking out a big radial gradient. Were they always doing that? https://www.dropbox.com/s/io8g94xullacghz/gmaps.png?dl=0

I took a year off of design school b/t my sophomore and junior years. Couldn't recommend it more. Got a ton of practical experience, got to work with some brilliant people, learned to code, learned how to work with engineers and assert myself as a designer. Things that design school can't teach you.

That said, I went back to school after a year, and the last two years have been all the better because of it. Check if your school will let you take a leave of absence. I ended up changing my major, taking different classes than I would have otherwise, and took some 'real' computer science on the side. It's pretty liberating to understand what you can do and explore and learn in school, after having experienced the more practical working world.

Interesting to note that New York Times app uses a "Back" arrow to get to the list of section on mobile. I know they've had issues with their hamburger on desktop.

  • Posted to Show DN: How to make syntax highlighting more useful, in reply to Shrihari Sankaran , Jan 24, 2014

Is the current way of syntax highlighting always perfect?

That's exactly what I wanted to get at, thanks for commenting. I think that IDEs have the potential to be a lot better integrated.

Appreciate the thoughts! yes, there's a whole lot of other stuff that can be done to improve how IDEs work. As a developer, what're your thoughts about something like Light Table?

    Appreciate the feedback, Ahmet!

I found that when I was looking for a function, I was looking more at indentation and spacing than color, but I also don't use as high-contrast a theme.

I appreciate the feedback, Adria! Especially from a developer's perspective.

There's definitely a tradeoff with this idea. For me, I didn't feel like I was looking for the color when I was trying to find where the function started— I was looking for indentation, because usually my function definitions are the only top-level indentation. And variables are defined at the top of functions.

It can definitely look messy once a lot of colors involved. I could limit it to just cool blues/greens/purples so it's less of a rainbow of color, but there'd still be a much larger variety of color.

I was hoping this was about an alternative to the hamburger button...
