Great list! A few I haven't seen mentioned yet:
I still love Dribbble and most of the designers I know still love it and use it as intended... for sharing and viewing fragments of lovely visual work as inspiration. I like your idea about a community for deeper conversations, but maybe it's not Dribbble. How about using DN that way?
I've always done both design and front-end development, the two are a natural fit for each other in my opinion. Front-end development is just another tool to create the layouts you come up with in Photoshop or Sketch.
Recently, as in within the last 5 years I've started backend development as well, thanks to Node.js, it feels great to create products from top to bottom.
That said, my friends who have focused 100% on design in their careers are better designers and I am, in my opinion. There's a trade-off of time spent.
Wow, thanks Andrew, the events calendar at Noisebridge is jam packed:
Eventbrite seems to have a few things. Also, there's an outdoor startup conference in Redwood City on May 14 or 15 but the tickets are pricey ($100+)...
Here's a calendar I found:
https://www.startupdigest.com/digests/silicon-valley
Also, there are Coworking spaces around that might have their own event calendars:
Boost VC (San Mateo) Rocketspace (San Francisco) Plug n Play (San Francisco) Nest GSV (Redwood City)
Could check with any if them about events?
Ha, I'm also a designer visiting the Bay Area for the month of May, from Vancouver, Canada. I went to a StartupGrind Meetup on Tuesday but haven't found a ton if other things, so locals, speak up! ;)
Adbel is doing a great job with this site - nice work dude.
We're big fans of Rackspace Cloud.
Hey Paul, I'd love to chat with you about QuoteRobot integration :) This looks awesome.
