JAM in London is pretty good, with a split focus on design and PM. Same with Mind The Product, which is marketed towards PMs, but definitely worth going as a PD. If they do it again, Loupe in Amsterdam (run by the Framer guys) is well worth a visit as well.
You know what, this infographic can get in the bin. UI design isn't just about creating pretty things, it's as much about solving problems as UX is. Also, to suggest that UI design is an artistic pursuit is completely misunderstanding what ANY design is. It's not art. It's solving a problem and trying to communicate something. Ugh.
To me, the user's intent is the only thing that truly matters.
Would you say the same thing about the n word? I don't think the user gets to decide whether it's acceptable or not, but the people that that term marginalises...
Some stuff I've done in the past: - Creating prints and selling them in local shops - Designing gig posters for local promoters - Starting a physical product (I run Wax & Stamp. Was a hell of a lot easier than I thought...)
Those are the design related things, although I find side projects that tap into your passions are super good for flexing your creative muscles. I've had bands, produced and directed theatre, ran a club night and loads of other stuff as side projects. Anything to help keep the juices flowing
HOW DARE YOU STEAL MY CATCHPHRASE! ;)
It's not necessarily a 'target market' thing, but the fact that it isn't inclusive. This in itself can cause some issue, but the bigger issue here is that the exclusive group is the dominant group, ie 'dudes'. Yes, there are clubs exclusively for women, lgbt etc because they are not equal in our society, therefore need exclusive safe spaces. It's affirmative action. IF the world was equal, then sure, it'd probs be different. But it isn't. As a result, it rankles quite a bit when a product is set up that tries to make an exclusive deal around the largest, dominant, safest group. It's not just marketing. It's bigger than that. This perpetuates the problem.
We've just started using it at Memrise and it works like a dream. The iOS devs are loving us at the moment.
Is it just me or is the crux of this article "we couldn't deliver on our promises and our app wasn't very good in the end". I mean, yeah, that's a pretty good way to have a huge drop off in revenue...

Hands down the best talk I've ever ever seen and I wasn't even at the conference...
