The author discusses clearly (very clearly, the text is bolded in each instance) why certain design decisions are made. Typography guidelines for size and weight, color/visual embellishment hazards, and the grid's structure were determined through repeated testing and the limitations & standards of the hardware itself.

  • Posted to Ask DN: What kind of questions would you ask the Interviewer?, Dec 15, 2015

Working on a blog post & podcast ep about this now. Here's the list I'm working with as I've been interviewing for a few months. More culture & team questions than nitty-gritty technical process.

    • How are teams structured? Where do I fit and who will I be working with?
    • Who are the stakeholders helping to drive design decisions?
    • How is my success measured? How often is feedback given?
    • What qualities must the ideal candidate possess to succeed in this role?
    • What is the onboarding process like for new hires? this will alert you to red flags in start ups that don’t give enough shits very quickly
    • Where do you see this role in 1 year, 5 years?
    • What are [Company]'s goals for the next 1 year, 5 years?
    • What is the biggest challenge facing the team? How will this role help solve that challenge?
    • What are the best and worst parts of the company culture?
    • What does the team like to do for fun?
    • What is your parental leave policy?
    • Do you have trans-inclusive healthcare?
    • What internal resource groups do you have for employees?
    • What opportunities are available for training, conferences, and continuing education?
    • What does success in regards to diversity at [Company] look like?

Glow was way too baby-focused for my lifestyle. Creeped me out.

The Ann Friedman Weekly: "Ann Friedman is a freelance writer who writes a weekly email highlighting her own work, the work of people she finds interesting, and other tidbits of knowledge. I LOVE the way she writes these." - NPR’s Social Media Desk

Nick D‘s weekly newsletter always makes me stop to reflect. Same with James T. Green’s “Studio Visit”. They‘re both introspective designers in Chicago who don’t send top-graphic-design-CSS-trick roundup emails, but messages that feel like actual letters.

    Katie Kovalcin:

I’ve been adding more women to my timeline lately and it’s been WONDERFUL. The topics discussed, the jokes made, the gorgeous selfies—they’ve all made me enjoy being on Twitter again. And following a diverse crowd of women and hearing their experiences has made me more empathetic and notice my own privilege as a white woman.

Enrich your timeline with some awesome lady designers, devs, jokesters, and thinkers!
