Version control for Sketch, Illustrator and Photoshop files

over 4 years ago from , Founder

Hey crew,

We just launched a new version of Trunk, our version control platform for design teams (version 0.1.39).

Trunk brings version control to your Sketch, Photoshop & Illustrator files. You can find out more about us here: jointrunk.com

We launched the alpha a few months ago and have had hundreds of designers feed back on how we can improve the app and design workflow for collaborating on design files. It has been awesome.. and now we’d love your feedback!

I’ve setup a promo code for 3 months free for you all. All you need to do is signup via this url: jointrunk.com/get-started/?promo=designernews

Cheers!

Not enough info on how it works. Here is what I'm looking for:

    1. Version control + backup + rollback (looks like you have this)
    2. Highlight what changed (I saw 3D which is fun but I'd love list that highlights that element on the design)
    3. Layer specific diffs.
    4. Conflict resolution (When there is a conflict, help me take care of it. Best would be merge, or choose A or B per layer)
    5. Feedback tool. I don't want to have to use a separate tool

      Hey Jonathan!

Fair points. We def need to get more of this content up on our site.

      1. Yes we do! :)

      2. True - the side by side dif comparison is probably more practical in most occasions. as shown here

      3. Yes we do have conflict resolution down to the artboard level. We wrote an article about handling merge conflcts here

      4. We have feedback backed right in. When you go into an artboard you can post your comments directly on the artboard. You can also share these links through our web app Gathering feedback in Trunk

      Cheers, Elliott

        Thanks for the info!

For me the biggest factor is getting to layer specific conflicts. Imagine if devs had a conflict in a long code file and had to pick which one they wanted. If I make a change and my copy editor makes a change, we need to be able to merge it and discard any accidental design tweaks they might have made in the file.

This is why Figma is a front runner for me. It makes this all moot. The file is live and anyone can work on it at the same time.

How is this different from Abstract?

First off. I think it's really cool what Abstract are doing. They are helping to educate designers on the need for better collaboration tools. I also think that a bit of competition is healthy :).

From day one we took a bit of a different approach where we automate the version control process by taking away the need to manually create, merge branches etc. It's based off our own experience from working in design teams and being in the industry way too long!

Practically, what this means is that when you start working on a file in Trunk we automatically branch your changes.

We felt that there's a lot going on in a designers workflow - so how do we go about helping them so they don't get bogged down in heavy Git concepts. It's a bit more of a hands off approach to handling the design workflow.

Also, I'm sure they are working on more file type support but right now Abstract only supports Sketch.

      Cheers!

It's kinda funny to advertise version control for design tools on designernews.

I miss layervault so badly :(

I signed up a while ago to see if it would be a fit at our company but haven't had a chance to play with it yet. Is this promo valid for existing users as well?

Good luck! Do you display diffs? If so, how?
