Don't confuse brutal with 90s web design. Tottallllly different.

Agree with Matt here. Retro design is cool when it harkens back to a time when design was cool or interesting. This web design time period was not one of those. The 90's were the lost soul of design, web design was trying to find it's voice in this new thing. This was a serious waste of budget for Adidas.

Current fashion trends mean this sits firmly in the 'cool' camp. Look at all the Balenciaga & streetwear aesthetic going on right now, it goes hand in hand with this.

It is a bit try hard tho

I wouldn't say it's a waste of budget. I highly doubt they're actually looking for a high conversion rate — or anything of the sort — with this project.

So. In contrast to how others are choosing to interpret your title, I'm assuming that by "brutal", you're not referring to "brutalist", because it does, indeed, look "brutal", and not "brutalist".

That sentence was fun to type up.

Moving on from there, yeah, I see what they went for with this style. It's a bit niche but sites like this were all over the internet within that very particular late90's, early 2000's design. Well, design is a big word.

Throwing together all these random images with no regard for whether they go together or not. Animated gifs for no reason other than "they look cool".

Which I suppose is what they're saying about the shoes. "Look at how cool these are!"

Fair game. I kinda enjoyed the flashback, and appreciate the look of the site :)

It looks like they're trying to resemble the style of clothing sold in Urban Outfitter's dwindling guy's section. Have you been in one of those places recently? It's bizarre.

This is absolute brilliance from a brand awareness standpoint. Props, Adidas.

I would have liked it more if the photos in their image galleries were taken with old VGA cameras.

As camp as the overall design is, I like it. Brings back memories haha
