Please add a "Tools" badge option to DN

5 years ago from , Señor Designer

I find it difficult to discern between badges when posting a story about a new tool or service. They usually land somewhere between either Show DN or Site Design – both of which would be incorrect if we're showing off a new tool for design.

Seems simple enough, but there may be some limitation to the DN framework I don't know about, like a limit of 10 or something.

I'd be interested in this.... one of the main reasons I come here is for news on latest tools, or info about new tools etc... or anything about Figma :)

This would be good for those of us who want to focus on creativity and great design so we can avoid pointless tool update articles too!

It's only pointless if you're not interested, I suppose.... for instance, when I see anything to do with Adobe XD, i generally ignore it, since I don't use the tool at all....

I think we all have said once in a while that a tools badge would be nice. Still we got none. But we have downvote now.

imo it may be helpful to remove badges all together.

Why? I'd rather have more badges – or like functionality – to be able to filter to content that I actually want to see.

We're in talks of doing something similar to this. Allowing more granular control, possibly even hiding certain badges from the homepage etc, or being able to search within a specific badge.

This sounds great. Being able to hide stuff like the Apple badge would be fantastic.

I totally agree, actually. I have them blocked in Adblocker and it really cleans the site up for me, and makes it easier to focus on the content.

The badges were nice when there was 1-2 per page, and the badges actually told you something. Now that there are a half dozen categories and 2/3rds of all posts have one, it looks very cluttered.

What does the community manager think? @SpenserWolz

Peep my response to Thomas for a little insight into what we're thinking in regards to badges. I think just allowing more control with the badges is a great idea. Being able to just select "hide all badges" to suit the use case you've described above is great and I'll it into our notes!

Yes, I think a "tools" badge would really make sense as well.
