I just released hellotimo.co, a time and task manager

over 5 years ago from , Product Designer

Hey DN! Today, I released my first side project into the world with the help of Richard Palmer.

Timo is a time and task manager designed around the creative’s workflow. It helps you track your daily tasks and time spent completing them all in one place. This means you'll no longer have a disconnect between work done and work logged, perfect if you're filling out pesky time sheets. Timo is browser based and even has offline support.

I'd love to hear any feedback you have on how to improve Timo.

    Hey Jordan!

This is really nice! The animations and overall feel is zippy and delightful. A few suggestions:

    • Pressing "Enter" when I'm entering a Task should create a new one underneath it.
    • Editing a task (the modal) pauses the timer—that seems weird.
    • It's kind of cumbersome to delete a task in the Edit modal. Why not just offer a trash icon on the list item itself and provide an "Undo" line once deleted?
    • If you do decide to keep the modal for task details, subtasks, descriptions, due dates, etc. (like Trello), I'd suggest showing the timer counting in the modal, allowing the user to toggle it in there too.

    • The visual hierarchy of dates vs. tasks doesn't have much typographic contrast. Everything feels like it's floating a bit. Consider subtle lines or zebra-striping to separate dates.
    • The dark purple used for highlights in Dark Mode doesn't have much contrast at all on the black BG. Bump that up a good bit.

    Hope this is helpful!

Hey Andy! Thanks for taking time out of your day to deliver some great feedback! I really appreciate it!

We're already thinking about better keyboard control throughout the app, hitting "Enter" is a great example of that. And the undo functionality is a great idea, really hope we can get that one in soon.

      Thanks again Andy!

Really appreciate the simplicity of this. No need to make an account. Simple to use. I can see myself having this pinned in my chrome tabs. I can imagine as a freelancer, this would be quite a useful little addition to the toolset. Nice work.

Consider adding an option for exporting time sheets to PDF or Google Sheets!

Hey Robert. Thanks for checking out Timo and your feature suggestion. We’ll be considering export solutions in the future.

I love the look-and-feel of this, very nice.

While in one way it's great that you don't need to sign up for an account to use it, I do think having a way of using the tool on more than one device would be useful. I tend to bounce between an iMac, MBP and iPhone when using task management tools.

One approach to enabling this without going down the road of user accounts would be to allow a user to "save" to a URI, then if I go to that URI on another device it would download the tasks from the server (and keep in sync as I make changes). You could provide the option to set a password on the list to keep it private, still without requiring an email address.

    Nice work!

      Hey Joe,

We’re glad you like the look-and-feel of Timo!

You’ll be pleased to know that device syncing is something already on our roadmap. Saving the data to the URI is a great idea and not something we’ve considered so far. We’ll be sure to explore this further when we come to work on on the feature—thanks for suggesting it and we’ll keep you posted with how we get on.

I would suggest that "Light Mode" shouldn't be #FFFFFF bright white, but rather a more pleasant soft blue or heather grey. Kind of like here on designernews.co, the background color isn't pure white, it's #ECEEF1. It's way less stressful on the eyes.

Hi Robert! Sorry to hear you find the Light Mode stressful on the eyes. We’re currently using a light grey in the form of #f7f8f9. We’ll be looking into testing this on multiple monitors to ensure the colour isn’t too harsh or stressful.

Very good! I think pushing it a little more grey would help, and as Chris mentioned basically a longer transition between dark and light would be a big help too!

I found the "light mode" jarring too at first; I think a more subtle transition might help alleviate that (the flash from dark to light is a lot)!

This is really lovely, so simple but just enough.

Some kind of weekly/monthly summary would be great.

Also, apps, all of the apps would be great.

This is awesome, do you have any plans on making a Mac OS app? Personally when tracking time I like to be able to see the current time tracked e.g. in the menu bar

Hey Marcus! Thanks for your feedback! This is certainly something we will consider. Our goal for this release was to solve the problem in the easiest form, and get it out get it out to test the waters. We'll keep you posted on any updates! :)
