It's amazing how modern digital design is becoming a collection of explicit copy-cats.

There is nothing undignified with basing a product on something that already exists. But at least try to prioritize improving the foundation you started with.

Food for thought: The creator's twitter avatar[1] vs Dustin's logo[2]

Dustin Curtis does not own any copyright over lightnings. Shall I show you a hundred users with lightnings as a profile pic? Really, don't you got something better to do?

Hmm, I kinda like it. But i do not know what the other options there are on the web at the moment. What other blogging networks are you referring to? What do you guys think are the best ones out there similar and better than this one?

This just brings people not appreciating good design & other people's work to a whole different level.

Even Rocket Internet adds something to the core ideas they recreate, but this… Oh well.

I work in advertising and even I have to turn my eyes in embarrassment. This is probably exactly what "crap artists copy, great artists steal" came from. Run away with it, don't urghfeeeeh with it.

What's the problem with a "similar" publishing tool with a slightly different approach and feel? Isn't that Svbtle thing something for a closed circle of people? I think that people must be able to say whatever they want to say, that everyone deserves a cleaner experience than what they're used to right now.

You're using the word "deserve" is a little too lightly.

My position is this: you're not entitled to anything unless by some mutual agreement. No one deserves to be able to post on svbtle, or any service for that matter. You have no natural right to say things on other people's networks.

You're free to agree to the terms of the services you use (even if those terms say that you're not allowed to use the service) or build your own service. That doesn't mean that, a company like Wordpress or tumblr doesn't think it's a great idea to give people free service, but there's no free lunch.

I love that I can create a tumblr account in two seconds, but the fact that most web services are practically a commodity doesn't make me lose sight of my privilege to use them.

Here's the thing: this isn't some guys coming along svbtle and thinking "this is a good way to focus on the important things (re: administration) and to build a network". They didn't create minimalistic blog network.

What they did, is they copied everything, mainly visual things, and ignored the core idea (minimalistic blogging network) they wanted to build alternative to. They took only visuals, and they got them wrong! (I know what helps minimal design to keep focus on main content: configurable large colorful area used as sidebar. Brilliant!)

TL;DR: I don't understand why there is anyone, who is pro- these guys. Instead of building good open alternative, they've builty shitty knock-off.
