What do you guys think about the New Gmail.?

over 5 years ago from , Hubstaff Inc

The redesign even though gives importance to tasks, calendar etc. The whole thing looks cluttered to me when I look at it. I have no idea why the compose button is hanging there just like that in the expanded form of the sidebar menu. like here https://goo.gl/nCpqG1

To me, the overall revamp looks like gmail is one step closer to inbox by gmail.

What do you guys think?

I don't really get why some people get so riled up for the the new Gmail UI. It might take some time to get use to, but in some weeks the buzz is over again.

We don't know what Google plans for the future of Gmail. Maybe the UI makes way more sense later on when new features are shipped. The redesign is part of getting it ready for the future.

The old UI hold up for like 7 years. And to me it looked a bit dated.

The typography is really bad. I have no idea why they have two different sans serif fonts (Roboto + the Google font) scattered around. I can't tell if there's a rhyme or reason to where the Google font is used.

I came here to say this. I have no idea what they are thinking here. Roboto to me is pretty much the perfect on-screen font. This new one ... isn't.

I'm a fan, at least when compared to the previous design. I'm an Inbox user, and the fact that so many of its unique features are now integrated into Gmail makes it a little confusing as to which app to use going forward. That said, the new features of the web app don't yet exist in any of the mobile apps, but I hope they do.

My biggest gripe, though, is the new Tasks app. Why in the world would the tasks not be integrated with the Reminders in Keep, Google Assistant, and Calendar??? WHY???

feels like Inbox is going to get the boot.

also feels like Keep is going to get the boot.

this is why i have trust issues, Google.

Keep isn't going anywhere. Not sure about inbox either, but there certainly needs something to happen with both clients. A merge or a drop of one of them. My complaint with inbox is the expanding email lists take forever and are buggy to close.

Google has a major problem with their product alignment. They are all over the place and internally it has to be even more of a nightmare.

In regards to Inbox bugginess... any chance that you are using Firefox? If so, try it on Chrome and it is relatively more snappy.

I use chrome 95% of the time. So ya. It's def. buggy/laggy for me no matter what machine I'm on.

Google developer tweeted out that they plan on merging them but they didn't have enough time/resources/insert some other excuse here to get it done. So, I guess find solace in the fact that they agree with you and it is coming in the future. But apparently it's a lot of work.

Not sure what it solves - just looks like a bad skin and the typography kinda sucks. Why isn't it full material design?

I am still on the old UI. My gmail hasn't switched yet.

I haven't seen anything that would make me switch from inbox. Although I am worried all the new Gmail work might discontinue inbox.

Absolutely agree... Inbox is amazing. I see a lot of people referencing bugs—in my experience I haven't come across any

As someone who always has Gmail open in a tab, I don't mind it.

They've rolled a few features from Inbox over without going full on Inbox. It brings some Inbox functionality over without becoming Inbox (I gave Inbox a try but missed the familiar GMail too much.)

What I really like is how the left column can collapse, and the new calendar / keep / tasks in sidebar is fantastic for me. But the real game changer is being able to integrate other apps there, I've added Trello in and it's already made the experience far more enjoyable.

I do love being able to snooze emails as well. Those ones that you want to deal with but not just yet. Fantastic feature.

I've had to create a few custom styles to fix a few things I didn't like, but this is still a beta and Google did say they'll be adding more stuff and tweaking things in the coming weeks.

I don't like the new font they started to introduce. Google Sans. It looks childish.

The cluttered feel was my biggest gripe with the old Gmail. This redesign has done little to fix that.

The "mini-apps" on the right hand side are really well done though.

    1) Great to see split view becoming a standard option, and that you can now mark an email as unread contextually, byhovering the listing item. Unfortunately the interaction is broken. It works the same way as on Outlook, and the previous Gmail lab extension (I've sent feedback to them twice, but I've never seen any changes). Emails should not be marked as read without the user actively clicking on them, that is just bad interaction design! For example if I delete an item from the inbox, the following email in the list should not be opened automatically (and marked as read). I didn't test it with search but I suspect there's problems there, as well.

    2) Overall, the new layout has more empty space and looks more appealing, but I personally prefer the old "compact view" (and the new one is not as compact, which is bad). For practical reasons, I don't need my gmail interface to look nice, but I'd like to see more emails. I guess for people who don't use emails as much, the new look may be better than the old one.

    3) The new "Compose" button looks much uglier than the old one. The icons next to the navigation links add clutter without adding any real value. Typography is just terrible: the same horrible font used for the logo is now being used as a header when you open emails, and I can hardly believe it because it's against all possible best practice. They are also rolling out the new font on other apps such as Google Maps and I can hardly look at it without crying. On top of that, it also allows for significantly less characters per line (4 characters less in the google maps search bar, tested on my mobile).

    4) New features that I won't use (like snooze emails). In the old version, I chose to see unread emails first, and no social/promotion tabs on top, as they bring no value to me. In the new version, it defaults to tabs on top and read emails are included on top of the page. I suggest that you leave the settings as they are, rather than changing them at your will? Don't force me into using functionality that I don't need.

    5) Why those top centred, out of alignment and huge check boxes, next to each listing item? I really don't get why UI elements are getting worst than in the previous version. Those check boxes just don't fit. And if capitalised Fitt's law is the argument, then I'd rather increase the clickable area around the checkboxes; you don't need to make them bigger!

    6) "Smart replies"... kind of sad!

    7) Good to see red notifications for potentially dangerous email.

The most clickable button here is DELETE.

    1) Old Gmail has a big, well visible & distinguished DELETE button, grouped with 3 items. 2) New Gmail has a tiny, invisible icon.

Nonsense! Consistency should never compromise usability.

New Gmail looks cleaner. Also, the button seems good where it is now.

I rarely ever use Gmail so maybe I'm missing something but calling this polish job a revamp seems a little excessive to me. It's the same app, with the same layout + scroll jacking.

Like most people here, I am mixed about it. BUT, as someone who occasionally works on computers with screen sizes that should be illegal, I am so grateful for the collapsible left menu.

Anyone knows, why Google replace Roboto to Google Sans?

I think it's been asked about in previous topics over the last day or so, so I'm not sure why we need another.
