Ask DN: What's your favorite font?

almost 11 years ago from , Co-Founder at Compagnon Agency

Standard fonts like Century Gothic Helvetica and Myriad Pro used to be a designer's best friend for a long time, but lately it seems like Gotham, Avenir and Proxima Nova are being used everywhere (not that it's a bad thing, it's a beautiful type).

So Designer News, what's your favorite font? And what's your opinion on these popular fonts?

Open Sans for everything online. If it's good enough for Google...

Although Proxima is being over used, I don't think it's a bad thing at all. It's a beautiful font in every way and looks great on both flat and non-flat designs. I'm a big fan.

I have been using Effra to wean myself off of Avenir, which I used to wean myself off of Gotham and Proxima Nova.

I am a fan of calligraphy fonts but the designer in me wants to see legibility so I'd have to say something that falls right between those categories. I don't think I've seen a font that is my favorite yet.

In terms of popular fonts, I think it's comical that helvetica became so ubiquitous; simply because some artists wanted to draw more attention to the actual design visuals. I like classic fonts, they could come in handy every now.

Really love Proxima Nova, but I also regularly use Open Sans, Din and of course - Helvetica.

Favorite sans-serif? It has to be Gotham (+Gotham Rounded).

Favorite serif? Merriweather on Google Web Fonts is what I'm using on my blog right now, and I love it. Adelle comes in at a close second.

Helvetica is still great. Futura is too. Can't say the same for Myriad Pro, though.

My absolute favorite fonts tend to vary a bit. In college I was obsessed with DIN. It was fortunate that it was such a versatile, gorgeous typeface. Later on I fell in love with Archer and Knockout. I still start every project trying to find a reason to use either typeface. Half the time I realize it's a mistake and I should be using something else. But I always love playing with them. Though on the web I'll often replace Archer with Adelle (via TypeKit) and that's always a good time. When setting a lot of type on paper (something I rarely, if ever, do these days), I've always found Hoefler Text to be a great serif for printing.

Futura is an all-time favorite. I like the art-deco character of Neutra. Tisa Pro for serif. And lately I'm into Source Sans Pro (free) and Brandon Grotesk.

DIN for headings, Kievit for body text and Auto 3 italic for the occasional added personality

DIN & Futura are my favorites. I find myself using Proxima Nova, Open Sans and Brandon Grotesque most though.

It's so hard to choose. I like Proxima Nova, Avenir, Rockwell (Just a few).. Online, I like Open Sans, Arial, Montserrat.

    Personally, I don't mind the over-use of certain fonts. They're beautiful :)
