Chrome is still eating all my memory for lunch so hopefully this new version makes FireFox competitive again.
When FF finally fixes the font rendering issues in OS X that have been there for YEARS, maybe I'll consider switching back.
Same here! The performance is tempting, but the font issues really bug me. I'll keep it installed, but I don't know if I'll ever make it my primary again.
Side by side with Chrome (left) and Firefox Nightly (right):
I've been using Firefox Nightly as my daily browser for a few months now, and I'm quite happy with it – I never open Chrome. Looking at them side by side for this was my first time comparing the two like that. Chrome renders DN quite a bit larger, for instance, and Firefox is marginally rougher on this site specifically but that's due to a webkit- CSS prop that doesn't translate over to Firefox. (DN also uses a moz- CSS prop for antialiasing but it's invalid).
You can see on NYTimes and Brand New, though, that there is basically zero difference.
I can't use a browser without rubber scrolling in this day and age ...
I love Firefox but am not happy with the new version name.
Quantum is being used by a lot of mainstream companies like,
As an open source foundation it should have another direction in naming imho.
makes a critique of "i don't like...", doesn't offer any suggestions or ideas for improvement. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Sorry, I don't see myself proposing better naming for a company like Firefox on DN comments.
Cool. Always happy to see competition with this kind of software. I guess I'll comment on the design side of things, since this is a marked with the "Design" badge. They definitely went gradient crazy with those illustrations. Feels a bit rushed. Looks like they just applied a gradient stroke to all of the lines without any real meaning. There's also some misalignment in the illustrations. The gap in the 3 dots for the window controls are especially bothering me.
I am actually quite happy since I was waiting for this new engine (Quantum) for a while…!
I switched to it already after at least 5 years of Chrome and pretty happy with it.
Performance is great, but I am not sure I would call that good design. It wastes a ton of space and doesn't take any steps to optimise the experience: there's still a separate search bar, the settings / extensions / bookmarks are still all over the place, showing you every possible search engine whenever you type something in the main bar (why is there still a separate search bar then) is weird.
I am not impressed.
You realize you can customize the toolbar, right? ie remove the separate search bar
I use Firefox Nightly & Firefox Developer Edition as my daily drivers and they've both been on this engine for a while now.
I've got to say the improvement in speed is definitely noticeable. Re-opening the browser with dozens of tabs vs 1 or 2 tabs makes no difference, it sill loads up right away. Super impressed so far. I'm a fan of the new UI as well, nice and fresh.
When did Mozilla update to that logo MOZ://a soo cool really fits the company!
This looks promising i just hope its half decent on OSX i noticed all the screenshots where windows
