Really cool to learn about how to vertically space text to make it more readable and more a e s t h e t i c.

So much of this is gut and taste. I've essentially got about three line-heights going (loose, standard, tight) because loose leading can look truly terrible on short amounts of text, and I also tend to prefer basically no leading on text that's all uppercase or perhaps enormous titles.

Getting this stuff right is so important though and even if most of your users don't "appreciate good typography" they can definitely "feel" it if it's wrong.

This kind of design by maths gives you pretty mediocre designs

It’s setting ground work. Using a baseline for typography ensures consistency which will in turn always make for a better design.

I can’t see how ‘this kind of design by maths’ would result in a mediocre design.

It depends on context but anything that has content longer than a paragraph benefits.

It’s pretty much the reason why we can read and digest newspapers/books/magazines.

This is great. This is going straight into my list of articles to send to people who ask me 'how do I get into design?' I think if you can nail the basics (hierarchy, rhythm, typography, white space, the grid) then everything else kinda falls into place.
