i honestly cant stand this protrusion and would prefer a solid black bar up there
Me too, would love to know the thinking behind it.
I also find myself wanting the corners to have less border-radius the more I look at it.
agreed. too much decadence here
I can't stand the giant radius. The UI wasn't originally designed with that in mind. It's all over the place.
I'm fine with the screen's corner radius and okay with the ears, but I really really really wish the inner-top corner radius of the ears matched the bottom corner radius of the sensor area. Having the inside of the ears with a tiny radius at the top and this big swooping curve at the bottom just looks weird.
That said, that's a minor niggle with what looks like so far a really visually stunning phone.
Differentiation. Simple as that. If they went with a solid border up top, you wouldn't be able to tell if it's an Android or an iPhone.
Great news! In a few weeks you won't care about the notch at all. Love live the notch.
Shit, I might be the only person on earth who likes the notch.
I just like the weirdness that the notch introduces in something that otherwise would be just another ordinary-flat-boring-symmetrical-screen.
Yup I said it, come at me haters!
Essencial Phone also has one, and I also like it.
i like the idea of the notch, if the time/battery/network can sit comfortably up there out of the way of the rest of the screen real estate, kind of line mini extra screens either side of the earpiece..
the s8 is everything I wanted the x to be hardware-wise, that screen is perfect. http://newatlas.com/iphone-x-samsung-galaxy-s8-specs-comparison/51345/#gallery
I much prefer the notch to those elongating bezels.
iMessage is the only thing holding me form switching.
It's useless to make fun about a problem that nobody cares about, because there are no people who user their phones only in landscape mode. The most people use it in portrait mode and will never notice any problems. Please chill and think twice before finding stuff "funny"... ;)
Found the German.
Please chill and think twice before finding stuff "funny"
Sorry dad
Unless you play video games... or play videos...
The visual obstruction is out of place for Apple. Imagine your mac dock at the bottom of your screen blacked out blocking everything. I curious why they had to do this. Why give us this space if you are going to take 50% of it?
Is anyone else concerned that not even Apple showcased any advantages to having a taller display with their own apps? Usually, when they introduce something that has a reason behind it, they will try to show in what ways it could be taken advantage of (like they did when they updated all their apps to support the touchbar in different ways, or how they introduced new UI features to the Plus sized iphones).
I don't think the larger screen is necessarily a bad thing (Not having tried it, I can't tell how awkward it is to reach the bottom or top with one hand), but is there a reason for it? Does it do anything?
Yeah, it seemed to serve no purpose whatsoever to have a couple of UI elements tucked up there.
My best guess is that they'll try to turn the notch into a screen for the next generation iPhone, but even if that's the case... wouldn't it be easier add the black bar and ask devs to expand the screen height a few more pixels next year?
I've heard people saying that without the notch the X is visually the same phone as the S8, so that might be a reason as well...
Samsung uses A11 chips now? That's quite a get.
They did mention (and I forget the actual percentage) a decent increase in content space. For some apps and experiences this will be more pronounced and a welcome improvement.
Yeah, so it's taller. But how exactly is that more useful? They introduced no new features to take advantage of the extra space and being able to see 10 contacts in the contacts app instead of 9 at a time is not exactly revolutionary or all that useful.
What exactly are you getting if you see 3 more lines of text from an article in Safari? It's not like you can read the entire page at once, you only read 1 line at a time, so if space is the only thing this screen delivers (vs more useful features like better tab management), then you would only save yourself one or two scrolls to read the entire article.
why wouldnt you use the space for buttons, icons ect real question is there some limitations? i dont make apps.
These seem really awkward to me and probably get annoying to use
This is ironic, sarcastic and just for fun :)
They will, when the jokes stop I'm sure we'll see some clever use of the space. But it does highlight some potential issues with the design. especially when you throw in the rounded corners of the display. Big considerations for app designers who are also designing for the displays with no rounded corners. (I'm not an app developer, just an assumption)
https://imgur.com/a/cOUJF According to Apple's guidelines you should keep your elements out off the corners/sensors area.
Once you get into all of the margins you can't use, you have a workspace around 10pts taller than the Plus model iPhones. It's a bit disappointing since all of the extra space is reserved for the system OS and all you can really do with it is add some additional window dressing.
There's an Apple Developer video that explains the new challenges facing UI designers and they cover the notch and rounded corners specifically. It's interesting to watch even if you don't do any app design/development.
Everybody should consider that the edge to edge display was created because the marketing told the designers it „had to be done“. Because everybody want it. So this notch Madness is because it cant be done today by apple so this notxh thing is because the technicians and designer cant develop a better solution. I agree on everybody who is saying that a böack area pn top would have make things very easy. Steve wouldn‘t hvbe approved this. But marketing told them that resource said they want it, and now we got this mess...
AFTER SOME TIME YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT NOTCH, IT IS LIKE DECDANCE HERE http://gamingtoolkit.net/
People that think it takes away screen real estate or that the space is not used well, are not quite thinking it through. The notch combines the status bar and camera, speaker and sensors into one row instead of having "two" rows like traditionally. Instead of having the status bar half filled with contend, the space is now used more efficiently by combining it with the hardware at the top. When watching a video, you either have the notch or black borders are created. All good!
Not having the notch would lead to a bigger phone due to wider bezel at the top and not having the corners that much rounded would lead to the same thing, either bigger phone or smaller screen, both with larger bezels.
So actually by extending the screen to the edges and introducing the notch and rounded corners, you're getting more screen real estate in normal use, not loosing any! The design is quite great and thought through when really thinking about it. I mean, there can not be more space filled with screen at all! It literally goes edge to edge. Top, bottom and sides!
