Never forget.
Can someone explain what this is supposed to be depicting? I'm at a loss.
I didn't get it either but a reverse search brought me to this article where they explain the reasoning behind their old logo.
This is real.
all that fanfare and the logo didn't even last 2 years.
It represent the failure of product designers doing branding.
Bingo!
Explain please.
Designing a product and designing a logo (branding) are two different skillsets.
Oke. Clear. But what went so wrong then? I did enjoyed the previous M logo.
there's no i in team
or the above
hahahah Your comment made laugh so hard that I spilled my coffee. Well played
That image is depicting how each letter’s ascender/descender was determined from the logo.
Look at the big individual M. Notice how one of the black lines up with the dotted line from the logo?
And for all those other weirdly lined up letters, follow the guideline and you can see that it’s setting the angle of the ascenders/descenders/etc of each letter.
They used the logo as a tool to help create a custom typeface.
I think it's clear the evolution of the company through its logos.
First one: we want to build a product, focused on making writing easy. The logo was functional, and black and white. Maybe the wordmark was a bit too heavy, but the M as an icon was great.
Second one: we want to be social media, to start generating revenue with advertising, and bringing in big editorial companies. The logo was supergeneric and on trend. The wordmark was nice, but too generic. The icon made no sense at all, was gimmicky, and erased a recognisable icon with an ownable black and white scheme from my phone to be a generic colored icon lost in a sea of forgetable icons.
Third one: we want to be premium content, with a subscription based model, and paying writers by engagement if they publish just for subscribers. The logo is really well crafted, and looks like a magazine. Reclaims the old black and white color scheme. Maybe a bit too trendy again, but great typography, so it may age well — unless they totally change business model and identity again in a couple of years.
So much more elegant. I hated that last one.
Did they just go back to their old logo from 2015?

Kinda, but the new one is a more stylized serif.
I always liked their original slab serif, but do like the sharper new one better.
Almost. I like the first one.
Brutalist
I don't clap it all that much
I never really got the green M rebrand.
I know they wrote a long post about their thought process—but hell, it's a publication.
Medium became popular partly because of their WYSIWYG editor. The site was praised for it's great typography. It seemed that some sort of serif wordmark should have always been the right choice for the brand.
Edit: This comment on their original rebrand is spot on.

The one Internet company that proved serifs are still alive and modern… went sans… Really like your exploration work, and thinking around the new mark. I feel the other mark be it simple, was iconic and distinguishable as the Medium brand.
Another one?
You can tell this site is over since they've introduced the insipid signup lightbox over every article.
Much better.
Looks like they used Noe Display with some tweaks:

they haven't even mentioned this one anywhere, weird. almost like they regret shouting about the last one...
Oh. I like this. But also..
Again!?
Yay, this is what I thought.
Rebranding suggest problems in marketing. But this is just my general opinion about marketing. They think that problems can be solved when starting new...
Much nicer. The green one never felt right.
They go through logos like underwear. I'll take this one over the last one though.
Typically, I change my underwear more than just once every couple of years.
Man the previous logo did not last long. Medium has been feeling a bit lost lately. Hopefully this is a sign that they’re working to correct coarse.
Again a new one. Looks good but the previous one was also good enough. Don't you think?
Good enough, not great.
however, I think, better than last one at least.
Meh.
Honestly, that's all I can say about this.
Maybe the previous logo isn't the most suitable for their business (although I prefer). This new one is more direct and suitable for their target audience. And yet a good typography always works well. If there is anything that they have succeeded in, it was getting people to talk about it. :-)
looks awesome !
Praise be. Another serif returns home.
About time.
hmm.. ok :(
