one word, Plant! https://plantapp.io Best version control tool for designers.

Haven't used abstract, but Plant takes care of the job seamlessly

Sure, it takes care of the job in the same way that LayerVault took care of it years ago. And takes care of it in the same way that Dropbox takes care of it, with some additional GUI and features.

But Abstract is not the basic version control that you find here. It's way more feature rich and frankly, more powerful. We're not just talking about one file evolving over time where you can look back at old versions. Branches add a whole new dimension to design collaboration. You can keep the Master file safe and clean, which acts as your single source of truth. Then branch from there to explore and work on new things without affecting the source of truth for engineers, etc.

Abstract also handles conflicts beautifully rather than having to worry about whether my changes will override someone else who's actively working within the file too.

It is completely different than what anyone has ever done. Maybe you haven't tried Plant because your description is incorrect regarding how It works. It's not about being feature rich especially features that are not designed right. Plant has some amazing features and more coming soon and it's already adding some of them as we speak, but it's about doing it right. With Plant I do not have to think about anything else besides my work, it just works.

"Hey Bob, is the site ready?"

"Not yet, Alice — I just can't get this damn bird to move right!"

"Okay folks, we're pushing the launch to next week!"

(I kid, I kid, the site looks great).

Waiting to try this since last year, let's see how it goes.

Out of curiosity, why did you change your domain from: abstractapp.com to goabstract.com?

One note on the site, besides the awesome party parrot: width: 100vw != width: 100%, vw includes scrollbarWidth. I don't know if it's just me, but these unwanted scrollbars just grind my gears.

As a general rule, don't use for vw for full width sections. Use width: 100% instead.

If you want to be hipster:

    .page-wrapper{ width: calc(100vw - (100vw - 100%))}

That's it for today, CSS Is fun!

Been on the Beta and this is an amazing product! The design industry has needed this for years.

I do have to say that the team pricing is a little prohibitive though. $21/designer is going to hurt for sure.

    EDIT: spelling

If it solves the problem it's setting out to solve, it's well worth $21/designer.

$21/designer/month. More than double the cost of GitHub which has been perfecting their process for devs for many years.. Seems high IMO :/

It is high, but I think it's worth it. We've been a part of the private Alpha and it has the potential to really improve a lot of the design process. It already solved a lot of problems we've encountered in sharing design files and gathering feedback between designers, and it's basically v1.0 right now. Can't wait to see what they come up with to improve the product.

Also, you usually have a lot less designers on a team when compared to developers. And I like the fact that you pay just for the actual designers who collaborate on the files, and the viewers are unlimited.

I logged in specifically to provide a counter experience to the folks saying that they're noticing crashes. Our team has been using Abstract for the past month and have been very impressed with the stability and overall quality of the app during its alpha phase. I'm not trying to discredit those who say they're running into problems, but given the level of polish and reliability of the app we've seen, I'm confident this is a small hiccup that will be addressed by the team.

This app has already had a marked impact on how we work. It's legit - give it a go.

Any way to make this work entirely locally, and sever it from your servers?

Hey Cory, afraid not! The Abstract experience is only possible because we control the entire experience end-to-end.

I'm also waiting for a git design solution that runs locally. Saving documents in an unmanaged cloud it's a no go for a lot of big companies afaik.

This is good, but I worry that suffers the same pitfalls of its forbears in that it alters the designer's workflow substantially (open files from app, no autosaving, branching/commits, etc.) After the high-profile demises of LayerVault and Pixelapse, I'm a bit hesitant to get a team on this.

edit: kicked the tires a bit. it's immediately awesome.

It requires a change in your workflow, but I would argue the current workflow is broken. It's akin to a development workflow sans version control, which is a mess.

As alpha user during last month all works fine. This is a game changer in the way team designers works.

Was looking forward to trying it out. Unfortunately, sketch keeps crashing repeatedly as soon I installed/logged in Mac app.

Hey Nitin, so sorry about that. We discovered that there is an issue with El Capitan and the plugin. Working on a fix right now!

I've been using Abstract private beta for the last 3 weeks. Best thing happened to me this year! Before Abstract I used to use git-lfs. Now Abstract changed everything for me. I can access my work from anywhere, it improved my flow a lot. Support is very friendly and responsive to feedback and bug reports.

    Keep doing the good work!

Sketch don't stop crashing after installing the desktop app. That's pretty serious since it might disrupt people's work.

Sketch crashed while Abstract was setting up. Now Sketch crashes every time I try to open it. This is not my idea of a good first impression.

Edit: I deleted the plugin via Finder and now Sketch will run.

Looks exciting! The value proposition really reminds of LayerVault. Is there a difference (besides the fact that there is no LayerVault anymore, so it's not really an alternative)?

    0 points
    • Josh BrewerJosh Brewer, almost 6 years ago

Thanks for the kind words! I'd say the main difference is that we built Abstract on top of git and embraced the git workflow in an effort to bring design and engineering closer together! We also have been able to achieve pretty good savings in file size/storage due to how we implemented things.

So excited to dig into this. I'm a sole designer, but I'm hoping this could help me keep my stuff archived better (vs. zipping up old versions & iterations, time stamping, etc.)

EDIT: Reading comments. I'm scared now.
