Macbook Pro vs Macbook Air

10 years ago from , Designer at LOOP

Hello DN!

I'm thinking about new workplace, so I'm in doubt which one to choose: Macbook Pro (nonretina) or Macbook Air (128GB) - both of them have same price.

I really love Macbook Air 13 because it's really thin, nice designed and it has SSD drive.

Macbook Pro 13 is also nice, and have a bit better specs, but it's bit thicker :)

Do you have some advices for me? Thank You!!

"If you stay still, go pro.

If you are on the move, go air."

I was facing the same question a fews months ago. I decided to go for the Air and i'm still happy with it. I work a lot with Photoshop and it's blazing fast, nothing to complain about. If I would have to make the choice again, I'll still go for the Air. Good luck!

I work on a Mac Air 2011 and although I should be switching to a MBPR as soon as the new models are announced, I can tell you that this machine has been the best thing that happened to me in ages.

Of course, I love its design, the fact that it's lightweight and can last for 6 to 7 hours (count more for the new ones) but to be honest, the speed really is impressive. I love the fact that you can switch it on and access your files in less than 20 sec. You can open Photoshop or iTunes in no time.

Over time though, I realized that I needed more power (I'm getting into After Effect and Cinema 4D) plus I need a bigger screen but really, the Mac Air will remain as one of my favorite computer ever.

Depends on what you are going to use it for I would say. Both are great laptops but if you travel/commute a lot and bring the computer with you.

I would recommend the Macbook Air.

I use MBA (my second one) in combo with a cinema display, and I love it. I love that it weighs practically nothing when I carry it. I work on some pretty damn big files these days (although most are 72dpi), and I rarely if ever experience any lag. I'm sure the next computer I'd buy will be a MBA, because I just don't care for the extra weight.

How much does the cinema display affect the MBA's battery?

Well you can't use an external display without the laptop being connected to a power source (which ends up coming from the display). I'm not sure if using a display for long periods of time has any effect on the life of the laptop battery. I haven't noticed any problems personally.

It's an easy choice if its between non-retina 13' MBP vs 13' Air. The MBA wins hands down (esp with the new haswell).

The tough choice is when it comes down to 13' rMBP or 13' MBA (both with haswell).

Words of advice: Get as much ram as which ever configuration you chose allows. You will regret it if you don't.

Macbook Air is cheaper and adequate for your usage.

Macbook pro is more powerful and more expensive.

You'll be upgrading every two years with the Air and can probably eek out 3-4 years with the pro.

I personally went with the Air since I travel and can get my upgrades paid for.

Up to 12 hrs of battery on that 13" air.

Yeah, that's really awesome. Just I heard that I can't upgrade Air model with ram/ssd, and there is my biggest doubt.

Yeah, a lot of parts in the air are soldered in place. While I believe it's for good reason, it's unfortunate for situations similar to yours.

Hi! I understand your wanderings very well, because I was in a similar situation myself. I would advise you to rely on the opinion of experts, not ordinary Internet users, because this way the information would not be objective. I have watched reviews of various models of MacBook on YouTube, as well as reading articles by professionals. For example, here I have learned a lot of information about how to use the operating system Mac OS, what is the difference between macbook versions and how to solve various problems in the work with the computer.

The airs are now powerful enough to be perfectly sufficient for nearly all design related tasks, excluding perhaps video editing & 3D animation. Several of our designers need laptops and they all use airs plugged into screens t a adesk - do max out the spec though.

If you're at a desk permanently, an iMac is a better investment for $-hardware than an MBP.

I use both at work/home and have to go with the retina. I do a lot of aftereffects work so the extra power is a life saver.

Go Air. SSD makes a big difference in terms of speed. More than a better processor does.

Wait for the Macbook Pro to get updated with a new Haswell CPU. Should happen soon.

I have both. The Air is my personal computer, and the Retina was provided by work. If I were to buy one (I do application design and web design mainly), I would buy the top of the line Air (i7).

The Retina is wicked fast and certainly more powerful, which is handy if you do any 3D or HD video/After Effects.

But nothing beats the Air's battery life. I was able to work on a 11 hour flight with 20% battery left to spare. This was designing in Photoshop, running a local webserver etc.

I would say Pro, but it's only because I have one...

The Macbook Air has more screen real estate (1440x990 vs 1280x800. People seem to miss this fact), SSD, weighs less, and has an extreme battery life.

It really depends on what you're going to do with it, but for 90% of the population I think the answer is definitely the Air.

Pro has a slightly longer life. I went from an 13" Air, to a 13" MBP Retina and the difference was huge, especially when working on an retina iPad project. SSD is a must though in terms of speed.

It's worth noting the Macbook Air also has a higher pixel density. Having owned both at one point, the Macbook Air is noticeably sharper, and the SSD really makes up for the lesser specs.

Agreed. The solid state drive is incredible. I have a MBA at home and an MBP at work and although the air has worse specs it seems exponentially faster because of the SSD.

If I'm limited to one computer, I'm going to go with the best specs, rather than weight.
