Earlier this year I applied and interviewed for a graphic design internship at Apple Music (an opportunity of a lifetime), and was turned down with a very kind letter stating that although they liked my work, they wanted to see more growth and training.

strangest reason to reject an intern.

As a former design intern, I can verify that they look at existing folios.

Internships don't give applicants a pass on having no experience at all. Obviously, different companies value prior training more than others.

An intern with almost no design experience and no design education. Interns are typically in school for the type of job they're applying for.

I'm not getting the whole rage/revenge comments here. Did people even read his post? There is absolutely no tone of animosity or anger. Was he motivated? Absolutely... but it's more of a "I know I can do this, I just need the chance" vibe. He's complimentary, thoughtful and detailed. If you've seen "rage" redesigns... there is a clear difference ("X sucks so I spent a week to make it the BEST").

This is surprisingly good and well thought through. Some great additions and improvements.

I want to make it clear that I didn't write the article, just came across it and posted. I was impressed by his approach. I always click into unsolicited redesigns with low expectations and this one certainly exceeded them.

Sometimes you have to accept it and move on.

I think the author is simply channeling a rejection into a design challenge. Nothing wrong with that.

Agreed. Instead of "moving on" he believed in himself and knew his surroundings were hurting him in order to get to where he wanted to be. So, he took initiative and - arguably more important - the time to show that he had the raw talent and drive to fit in at Apple.

In all seriousness, what did he have to lose by doing this? Or maybe the bigger question is..., what did he have to gain by quitting on his dream?

what did he have to lose

Never getting a job at Apple.

Do you honestly think he will never be able to get a job at Apple because he did this? He made it clear that they asked to see "more", he saw that the school he was at was going to make that challenging, so took initiative.

You know how he'd never get a job at Apple? By quitting.

Honestly one of the best unsolicited redesigns I've seen. Particularly impressive is the spotlight/playlist artwork branding system, which hits a perfect balance between consistency, originality and maintainability.

I like the Sampler idea, I'd definitely use that. Looks like theres some solid thinking behind this. nice.

As a side note (mostly just a rant), another thing I dislike about the music app is that its now's designed mainly for Apple Music subscribers, which I get, but it hinders the experience for those of us who don't. I totally get why from a commercial pov it's that way, but I wish at least there was an option to keep the bottom nav bar how it used to be (i.e. Artists / Albums / Songs) for quick switching. Its due to this that I switched to a different app entirely.

Well done, now a couple of servers with some music on it and off you go!!

On a serious note, it's sad that clearly willing students are not always given a chance to show their potential. I'm guessing this is with the bigger brands. Which leads me to another point, I wonder (aside from obviously the recognition that you interned at apple) how big the benefit is from interning at a big brand vs. a local yet good design firm.

Anyways, good job! Love the work you have done and like others have said, def. their loss!

Sounds like an attempt to take the revenge

How? Do people understand what revenge means? It'd be one thing if he was rejected by Apple, then did spec work for Spotify and then was hired by Spotify. That's revenge. That's "oh I'm not good enough for you Apple, I'm going to Spotify and I'll show you what's up".

Doing work to prove he has the chops to get an internship at Apple... wth the sole hope of re-applying there... is not revenge at all.

"I got rejected by Apple Music so I gave them a few thousand dollars work of design work for free" ;)

But the work is great, good to see an unsolicited design at this level of quality.

Considering the size of apple's design teams I wouldn't be surprised if they already have internal concepts that have touched on the exact same issues

      1 point
      • Account deleted 6 years ago

Probably... and an even greater benefit if so. Why? Because it shows he has the kind of though process and understanding of the product that those on the internal team do... which means he could potentially be a good fit.

I didn't mean to say it to minimise his effort, I just meant it probably doesn't have apple sitting and thinking "ooh look at these thousands of dollars of free work we just got" as the guy I was responding to would imply.

Ah, the advantage of being in school and having the freedom to work for little or no money! Also keep in mind that the work of a student is worth far less than a seasoned designer... so doing this had a good risk/reward ratio.
