Sketch Wishes

over 6 years ago from

What are some functions you wish Sketch had?

I have three:

• A modifier key for changing a shape's height or width that would make it grow from the top or left, instead of bottom and right.

• When selecting text and then entering the typeface menu, I wish Sketch would start the list at the font you have currently selected.

• Access to solid document colors while in the gradient panel

Curious to hear more :)

    • Ability to name colors in palettes

    • Access to solid colors in the gradient panel

    • Shared symbol libraries for teams

    • A flexible layout system similar to flexbox

It would be great if Sketch took type seriously. The current tools for styling text are a joke. TextEdit has more powerful typography tools.

Global colours (do correct me if I've missed this).

Text styles applied to a paragraph rather the text area. Seriously, this is a productivity killer.

Improve the typography (mixed line heights, more paragraph options, styles based on paragraphs) so designing long form content is possible.

…and for Sketch wish list bingo purposes, DARK UI! You are killing my eyes!

I've been using the software professionally for only a few months, but quibbles aside, my number one wish is that I'd like to customize how zooming works.

With a Magic Mouse, command+scroll is way too easy to accidentally zoom when using various shortcuts. As a result, I'm constantly looking at my zoom level to make sure it's not sitting around at 105% or 95% unintentionally.

This is the sole reason I stopped using a Magic Mouse recently.

Get yourself a Logitech mouse. I use an M705, but there are lots of good options.

The battery lasts forever, and you won't accidentally zoom in on interfaces—this includes Sketch and Google Maps.

It may not look as cool as a Magic Mouse, but it's worth the tradeoff.

Not recommending the M705, i had it and yes the battery lasted 2 years, but it's not good for every surface, after changing my desk, the mouse was unusable.

Now i have the MX Master

You have to do a keyboard command + scroll? You should try using AE with a magic mouse..

The best way to work for me is by using a mouse + trackpad (for navigating and zooming).

Fixed vs. Auto width for symbols would be Italian chef kissing his fingers

If I have a button symbol, I'd love if the button could auto-resize to fit the text contents if the override text is longer or shorter than the base text.

    • Smart margins around a object. When I move an object it should push other objects away just like how regular drag n drop interfaces behave.
    • Advanced typography like Indesign
    • Built in responsive design tools

Direct selection of multiple anchor points across different layers and groups (like Illustrator), without having to go into a "direct selection" mode first.

Be able to apply different text styles to different parts of a text box, without having to break it up into small pieces.

Ex: Right now if I wan to apply the Title style to a text box, i select the tile and choose the style. Then if i select the next paragraph to make it bodycopy style, I lose the style I just applied to the title. To avoid this, I need to break the type box into two, one with only the title, and another the bodycopy, so if I make the title bigger, I need to realign the box with the copy to keep a consistent baseline.

I actually like the dedicated Symbols page, but we really need a better way to organize it. Especially since moving small artboards is so hard, and symbols are naturally going to vary dramatically in size.

There's image replace, how about an image reload? I often do quick edits in Ps and find myself needing to just reload the same one because I keep the same img filename.

I would love vertical text centring options.

    e.g. Top, Middle, Bottom

Currently text is only set to top. So when you have a symbol that might have 1 or 2 lines the text looses it vert centre position.

    1. Better Text Styles - I feel like colour and alignment of text shouldn't be included in text styles, just font, font-size, line-height, letter-spacing or it could allow users to select manually what properties should be synced within Text styles.
    2. Share styles on everything - I feel it would be really cool if you could apply Shared styles on anything, text layers too.

So nobody wants a more powerful custom shortcuts system? The native macOS shortcuts have so many limitations.

    • Find and replace colours, font styles etc • Less dependency on plugins or at least work on compatibility issues with popular plugins so they work with sketch updates • Dynamic buttons and containers • Ability to click and drag to select objects within a group • Don't exit a group when one item is deleted within it • Blending modes don't work very well. My favourite one in adobe is "soft light" and sketch's version is nothing like it, unless I'm doing it wrong? • Direct selection tool

Global Color Swatches, like in Illustrator. So if you modify a swatch, all elements using that color are also updated.

    • Color Palette Management (with symbol-like functionality)
    • The option to have color or svg-fill overrides in symbols
    • Text-Layers, that don't automatically snap into fixed mode, once they are part of a symbol
    • Better Line-Height Management

Th one with the line-height might be just an odd one for me - but I do web Interface Design and I find myself not being able to rely on line-height in sketch, especially when it comes to margins.

    2. Dark color app theme, like photoshop
    3. Ability to zoom in onto an artboard if selected and from a whole view of cmd+1
