    Protip if you're ever in this situation: try to resolve the issue privately before shouting about it on social media, especially when 99% of the time things like that are the fault of a lowly intern somewhere and have nothing to do with the parent company.

    In this case the person complaining doesn't seem to be the designer, so it feels more like an attempt to generate cheap outrage and publicity than an honest try at achieving anything constructive.

      Agreed. Isn't there any empathy left in the world anymore? Why someone think that every mistake is deliberate intention of evil corporation, like, the one who order this kind of thing is the fucking CEO, is beyond me.

      The usage of copyrighted image is wrong, that's for sure (and I LOVE Firewatch to boot) But is it necessary to 'brand' the wrongdoer so publicly when you don't even know who is responsible for this?

      Yes, the responsibility holder in this case is still Ford. But to named the headline so clickbait-ey and judgemental like 'XX Company rips off blah blah...' is just... c'mon man.

      Exactly. The dealership apologized on Twitter. Campo Santo accepted the apology and no one got hurt here other than maybe some designer the dealership got to make them an ad. We want to make villains out of everyone. That vitriol in this thread and on Twitter is way more obscene.

        The video is using their own illustration, with way too much inspiration taken. The screenshot posted is of Campo Santo/Olly's actual artwork lifted.

          Way too much inspiration? I've seen that vector-style illustration of mountains/trees done in the exact same style and color palette about 50,000 times on dribble.

            With the context of the other stolen artwork along side this the pitchforks are completely justifiable.

            Villagers with pitchforks, or people saying something sucks, whichever hyperbole works for you.

      Yeah, there is no difference between artwork of a kind of famous publisher/illustrator used in a game many played and an anonymous Google Search result. Perfect example.

        I know you were trying to be snarky, but your comment actually perfectly describes how copyright law works.

        Just because something is more popular, does not mean it is "more copyrighted" than an image nobody has ever seen before. So literally, there is no difference between the two examples.

          Oh, trust me, I know. I'm from Germany and it's far more complicated here than anywhere else I know of. :) But you asked why we talk about this and not some random other company with some random other image and the point is that this is a very well known game, by a very well known company (Panic, at least) and an illustration by a very well known artist. There's a difference and a good reason for why we're talking about this and not every other copyright case out there.

    I'm wondering if they knowingly ripped the design or if they contracted a designer that ripped it. I could easily see a team of senior mangers who have no idea what Fire Watch is contracting out a design; getting a few comps back and choosing this one.

    Also doing some research by googling "flat wallpaper" on Google, one of the first results popping up is that artwork from Firewatch, without any credits.

    I guess the guy who designed it didn't know it came from the game and thought it was just a random free wallpaper he or she could use. (without trying to justify the plagiarism of course).

    I felt weird when I was upvoting this story, mainly because the act of upvoting something like this seemed wrong. I'm not sure how we can solve the plagiarism on the web but it doesn't feel right to give a positive reinforcement to something wrong. I would like to propose something like a button or section just for copycats.
