Ask DN: Would anyone be interested in a Video Course for Kirby CMS?

over 7 years ago from , Frontend Software Engineer

Hey DN, I've been getting familiar with Kirby CMS lately to redesign my website. Coming from a Wordpress background, I was a little upset that there isn't as robust a mainstream community, thus, no video courses on Youtube, very few getting started guides etc.

So, I had an idea of creating a video course as I grow more and more familiar with the platform. Would anyone be interested in a Getting Started guide that explains the docs in an easier way (especially for those not familiar with PHP?) I could start with a a 5 part course on my Youtube channel :)

edit: Due to the amazing response, I made a landing page with a free crash course on Kirby. Check it out!

Funny to read this! I actually started working on a videos this weekend explaining the different structures within Kirby for example: blueprints, templates and controllers.

I am building a site in kirby to that embed the youtube videos and displays them chronologically with additional text info and links to resources and once it is finished I am planning to reconstruct the site bit by bit in kirby to give people a walk though on how to make it.

If you would be interested in working with me on this or chatting some more please feel free to hit me up at chrismvasey@gmail.com :)

Question. Why did you chose Kirkby over Wordpress?

      1. Kirby doesn't use database. Everything stored in the filesytem.
      2. Installation and integration to your website is far easier.
      3. Less code

Yeah but if you're developing for someone, charge it separately. Let's say you work for $30 for an hour, no one will consider $17 license fee much.

Also you can use demo version for your personal development. Kirby shows a warning on panel homepage if you deploy it to a URL (i.e. www.johndoe.com).

To reiterate / add on to Cihad's Answer:

      1. No database means simply dragging and dropping folder to move your entire project as well as much easier version control.
      2. Its a pretty barebones CMS giving you only what you need, and as your project grows more complex, (shopping cart, blogging, etc.) you can add more plugins.
      3. Less code means much less bloat and much faster load times.

It has been my experience that there is very little good video tutorials out there for any of the non-Wordpress CMS's. So any additions I'm sure would be very well received by the community.

My personal opinion is that a tutorial about taking a static site with the basic design patterns: a hero rotator, a product/product hub relationship a simple blog - would would cover the requirements of 90% of the client sites freelance developers are asked to build.

Thats what I was thinking. If the Free YouTube course is well-received, I'm thinking of creating a course where I'd walk you through creating a portfolio site with a blog, and in the process use all the major features of Kirby. :)

Definitely. Been thinking about getting some education on Kirby. I always find it easier to watch than read.
