I've had a lot of these same feelings about iTunes for a long time. Nice to see it in writing, and that I'm not alone. Just one adjustment.
Yeah, that's iTunes from 10 years ago, with a more sensible lefthand bar. It's not beautiful, but at least I knew how to find the App Store.

Same, but I guess to the author's taste anything with a bevel or shading isn't 'beautiful'.

The old iTunes "worked". It was simple, easy/clear to use. That was the spirit of what made Apple so great. They have stumbled a lot lately on focusing too much on designing things less about ease of use, and more about looking great when not in use (marketing shots, etc).
