Not a theme or tumblr ¯_(ツ)_/¯. Hosted on s3/cloudfront, using jekyll as the static site generator

    Hey folks,

I just redesigned the photos section of my blog as I've been creating more and more photosets of my travels and have a big one coming up from a recent New Zealand trip. Just a hobby, so there are definitely some bugs, a few visual nitpicks I need to address and various responsive issues but decided to push it anyways. :) It's hosted on S3/CF and built with jekyll but all custom design and dev otherwise (a few JS libraries though like colcade for the index page grid - lighterweight than masonry).

    Some example photosets / collections:

I really love the zoom-in and out animation on the links to the photo sets on hover. I like they last for a pretty long time; it's a nice visual effect. The UI feedback on those just feels really nice. Also, I think in general the dark backgrounds really make the photos stand out. Great job! Your stuff is always so clean, but extremely detailed and refined!

You won't believe it, but I've been looking for your site for quite sometime! Forgot to bookmark it the last time around, got it now thanks to HT!

Photography for me has always been about storytelling. What I love about your photos & your site is the sense of immersion I get. It's as if I'm there on the journey with you. Really enjoyed the day by day format. Keep up the great work!

Thanks man! Much appreciated. I'm slowly getting into shooting more and more video to help share my story. With every new trip I try to have a new "thing" to learn about and incorporate into my photosets. For this one I originally planned on buying a 360 camera and integrating some 360 videos or interactive photos but after lots of research it looked like just about every "simple" all-in-one 360 camera had horrible image quality and the only good ones were the 4K ones that aren't out yet (Nikon has one coming soon).. or having to create my own behemoth multiple gopro setup which would not be friendly for traveling light.

Awesome site to present your photos, really love it. Do you use any plugin for the lightbox effect? Or did you built it yourself?

I just got back from Japan (many of the same locations and thousands of photos) and have been meaning to put up something like this for a while. Nice work! I especially love the inline videos that give the whole site an immersive sense of motion, as well as the hero videos at the top of some of the pages. This inspires me to put up my stuff online.

BTW, my Japan trip was my single favorite trip so far and I loved New Zealand as well. Did you go to Doubtful Sound or Milford Sound?

Amazing from both design and frontend engineering sides, buddy.

(and thanks for the colcade tip, I'm currently using masonry and was looking for something a bit more lightweight)
