AMA: Adobe Experience Design Team (formerly Project Comet)

over 7 years ago from , Product Manager for Adobe XD

Hey everyone,

My name is Demian Borba and I'm a Product Manager for Adobe Experience Design, or simply Adobe XD.

Maybe you already know that our first Public Preview went live on Monday March 14. We are extremely excited with all the reactions in the community, positive and negative. This is the first step of a long journey, where we are really listening to customers and carefully crafting every single piece of functionality landing in Adobe XD, with lots of new features arriving in monthly releases moving forward.

Last year, we answered lots of questions from you and, now that our first Public Preview is out, we'd like to do it again.

All members of the Adobe XD Product Management team will be answering your questions throughout the day:

We are happy to answer any questions you have regarding Adobe XD, the team or anything else. What do you wanna know?

We'll start answering your questions on March 16th at 10am PDT.

I'm sure this wasn't their decision and renaming from Comet to Adobe XD was someone higher up in the chain to be consistent with the rest of their suite. But I agree: not sure how I feel about the official name.

How does the word "Comet" describe user experience design?

Citing some of the clearer Adobe application names: Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere, Animate, Audition, Bridge, InCopy

Less clear : Dreamweaver (Macromedia), Flash (Macromedia), Acrobat, Muse

Ha! While we loved Comet as a codename, we wanted to make sure there was a connection between the product name and what the tool is for. We want to help you design and share compelling user experiences, so Experience Design makes that clear. We also needed to make sure it worked alongside Adobe's other tools from a naming and positioning perspective. Shortening it to XD makes it less of a mouthful though, so you'll see us refer to it mostly as that :)

Naming is one of those things where I don't think it is possible to please everyone - our focus now is on making an amazing product. Hopefully that will come through, such that it doesn't matter as much whether you like or loath the name...

      Thanks, Andrew (@Adobe)

What happened to them? Why are there no layers?

Will layers ever be making an appearance in XD?

Is Project Comet the reason why Adobe shut off development of Adobe Fireworks?

    20 points
    • Rasmus ErikssonRasmus Eriksson, over 7 years ago

Have a feeling they discontinued Fireworks to force people onto Photoshop. I have another feeling that Comet is a response to the popularity Sketch and similar apps. Lots of feelings here.

      5 points
    • Andrew Shorten, over 7 years ago

      Hi,

We stopped development of Fireworks because we didn't believe it was possible to transform the product, both from a feature and architecture perspective, to deliver a solution we believed was fit for the future.

We believe that Adobe XD represents the future of design... one that is unconstrained by the past and that enables us to iterate fast based on feedback from designers.

      Thanks, Andrew (@Adobe)

I switched from Photoshop/Illustrator to Sketch a couple years ago and haven't looked back. For an avid Sketch user like myself, in your opinion what is the one unique workflow or feature of Adobe XD that may convince me to switch away from Sketch?

    14 points
    • , over 7 years ago (edited over 7 years ago )

      Hello Poyi,

We are trying to enable designers to enjoy a frictionless workflow, from idea design all the all through prototyping and sharing, and when changes are necessary, it's easy to go back to your designs and iterate. All within the same tool. On top of that, we created powerful tools to improve your pace as a designer, such as the Repeat Grid tool or the new Pen Tool.

Feel free to send your feature requests to UserVoice.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

How do you plan on competing with smaller organisations who can produce applications and application updates very quickly?

    12 points
    • Andrew Shorten, over 7 years ago

      Hi,

I've been working with product teams at Adobe for the last 6 years and I cannot begin to describe the transformation that has taken place in terms of how we define and deliver our software. No more 18 month releases cycles here ;)

I think we're set up well to deliver monthly updates, where we incorporate feedback from customers on an ongoing basis and change the priority of what we're working on based on that feedback.

Development speed is not always the #1 priority though - focusing on performance, quality, stability and integration with Creative Cloud are other important aspects that I hope you'll see value in too.

      Thanks, Andrew (@Adobe)

My jaw is kind of dropped that you're doing this ama. I have a lot of respect for your opening yourself up to DN like this. Thanks for that.

My question: Where do you intend for XD to fit in my web or ui design workflow? Do you mean for it to replace photoshop/illustrator/sketch entirely, come after some of the heavy lifting has been done, or other?

edit: some context. You're probably more aware than we are that alotismissing from XD (and sensibly so. it's a beta). My question comes from the consideration that maybe some of it was left out on purpose and isn't in the roadmap.

    12 points
    • , over 7 years ago (edited over 7 years ago )

Thanks for your kind words Daniel!

We know that Photoshop is great for bitmap manipulation and Illustrator is great for vector artwork creation, but they were not initially designed for UX Design, now a big and more complex field. You can continue to use these tools for the purposes above, but we hope that you can improve your pace and become more productive designer by using Adobe XD for UX Design and Prototyping, and Sharing to learn and iterate fast.

This first public preview is just a foundation to host a lot more features which will land in our monthly releases. It's fast and ready to grow for the years ahead. This is just the beginning of a fun and long journey.

Feel free to send your feature requests to UserVoice.

      Hi Paul,

We have an internal backlog with tons of features and our team is working as hard as possible developing them as we speak. You can expect more and more new features landing with our monthly releases.

To get a sense of the backlog, you can look at UserVoice. It's not a coincidence that the top features there have a higher priority in our internal backlog. It's great validation with our line of thought and we can't wait to deliver them in Adobe XD.

What was the reasoning behind adopting shortcut keys outside of the Adobe universe?

For instance, in Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign all have R= Rotate, while Sketch uses R=rectangle. XD uses R= rectangle as well.

    7 points
    • Dominik SchmidtDominik Schmidt, over 7 years ago

I think to compete with Sketch. Don't know about the rest of the shortcuts, but they likely adopted the shortcuts from Sketch to make the switch easy as hell for a former sketch-user.

      4 points
      • David ThornDavid Thorn, over 7 years ago

The funny thing is, the former-sketch user, was likely a former Adobe user at some point.

The main hurdle keeping me from fully adopting Sketch was frustration relearning shortcuts I use everyday in Illustrator at my 9-5.

But if I have to relearn how to work anyways, I have less incentive to stay in the Adobe ecosystem. And Sketch has shown to have an active plugin industry, with outside developers bringing a lot of useful plugins on a much quicker timeline than Adobe historically has.

I feel like custom Hotkeys should be native and accessible for most products like this. Too bad that doesn't seem to be the case.

      1 point
    • Tom KrchaTom Krcha, over 7 years ago

      Hi David,

we are looking at ways to enable shortcut customization in the future.

We are not planning a specific Rotate tool. You can rotate an object by hover around the selection bounding box corner, which we believe is a more intuitive and modern way of rotating objects.

The next update is planned for April. We keep a reasonably flexible schedule, so we haven't nailed down the exact date and scope yet.

We'll share more details here when we know exactly what's going to land in that release. The feedback we've received though over the last couple of days since launching the preview is being considered as we prioritize the work.

      Hi Robert,

With regards to PSD import and export, there is a request here: https://adobexd.uservoice.com/forums/353007-adobe-xd-feature-requests/suggestions/12869040-import-photoshop-psd

And, we are reviewing the various use cases people have to see how we can best solve them. Can you comment in the uservoice thread regarding what you need PSD import and export for? Our vision is that you would design in XD and bring in bitmaps and components from Photoshop. Therefore, the workflows we are looking to support are copy/paste as well as placement of things like smart objects through Creative Cloud libraries.

But, as mentioned by my other colleagues, we are reading people's feedback to review the features we are planning to build to see if they fit your needs.

Would you be providing animation support because right now we have to rely on other apps just to show what an interaction could look like in motion. If XD provides in-built animations along with custom animations, then this could be the TOOL I am looking for. Thanks.

Well, Invision launched the "Craft" Plugin full of features for Sketch, including that "repeat content" and prototyping directly on the app. Affinity is moving their apps to Windows. Looks like a great battle. Though, (as a Macromedia Fireworks user) I'm still hoping the killer app from Adobe. I know that XD (that I prefer to call Comet) is a super beta preview, but looks like your approach is totally UX Designers.

    • We don't need a masterful app to manage bitmaps, but yes, we need basic bitmap treatment (wand tool - convert marquee to path specially), as Fw does.
    • We need that Path treatment as well: http://puu.sh/nHTWw/7e67787ddc.png
    • We need GRADIENTS, layers, alpha masks, knife tool to divide vector shapes singularly where we want.
    • PSD support (clients don't want to install a new app, they mostly use PS)

I know, again, you're still in beta phase. But you need to figure out quickly how to focus Adobe Comet. There's a lot of UX software, along with a lot of UI apps.

We don't want to limit ourselves because of some feature is missing. Instead, I want to design without basic graphic limits.

Honestly, I just want and app like fireworks, where I can edit bitmaps, vectors, build an entire UI and make Prototypes. But with the new (and awesome features) of project comet.

Come on guys, is like theming Fireworks with the XD UI.

    Peace.

We're focused on enabling a design, prototype and share workflow to enable you to craft compelling user experiences for web and mobile.

We'll be going deeper on all those areas over the coming months, rounding out gaps and, based on feedback, providing the depth of tooling that you need.

      Thanks, Andrew (@Adobe)

      Hi Dan,

With regards to PSD support, it sounds like you are asking for PSD export so that you can hand off a PSD as a final deliverable to a client, is that correct? I'd like to fully understand your use case to weigh it against the features we have in the works. What other deliverables go along with the PSD to clients?

The additional information will help us to understand the use case customers have better.

Hi Dominik, we will share more details as we unroll our extensibility via Javascript.

    1. Is the integration with other adobe apps going to be improved? Now I can copy from Ai to Xd, but I can't do the same back. I think linked files like in indesign would be perfect.
    2. Moving artboards with content in them it's impossible. Also, view of all the connections between screen would be very useful.

      2. To move artboards with content in, please select the artboard by clicking on its title. Then you can drag it to wherever you want. To show all wires at once, please use CMD + A.

      3. Yes, more animation control is coming soon.

      4. To fix error 1001, please close Adobe XD, logout from the Creative Cloud app, then reopen the Creative Cloud app and re-launch Adobe XD. Please file a bug here if you find other bugs.

I'm proud Creative Cloud subscriber. You've done nice updates for Indesign last week. Thanks.

But your XD is really XD. Sorry for that verdict. Why you went live with that very raw product preview? Ever preferences pane doesn't work? Would you use consistent color picker across all the products? Hotkeys?

I should wait more 2 years to get a viable product from Adobe. At the moment workflow of Invision + Sketch + Craft looks so much better.

P.S. Sorry for my bad English. Good luck, Demian.

      Hi Alexey,

one of the reasons we launched the "Preview" version this early is to make sure we get lot of feedback on priorities and the way things work. We believe that being open about our work gives us lot more to explore and gives community a chance to be part of building the product. It's hard to change things once they are final, it's much easier to build things just right with your input early on.

New color picker, gradients, preferences and many other features are coming soon. Stay tuned ;)

    • Where is the layers panel?
    • Why there is no right-click on an object, to reorder it (send forward) for example, or to delete it?
    • I can't add multiple strokes.
    • There is no gradients.
    • I can't import.
    • My client want me to export the designs, not the assets.. How can I do that?
    • How to control the border radius of one angle, not the whole rectangle?
    • The colors selecting process is confusing. Why not having one like Sketch, or Photoshop?
    • How to add multiple shadows?
    • Is there a way to make reusable symbols?
    • Why I can't make the text element fixed? I've a paragraph and I need to control the width of it.

Hello Ahmad, thanks for your kinds words.

      Answering your questions:

      1. Layers are coming soon. We have spent months investigating the challenge and I hope you like our solution, it's pretty special;

      2. Right click (context menu) is landing soon, for now just with Copy/Paste/Delete but more items will be added and released with our monthly releases;

      3. Multiple borders (strokes), fills and shadows are in the backlog;

      4. Gradients are coming soon, as well as a new color picker. For now, you can do gradients in Illustrator, copy and paste to Adobe XD;

      5. What are you trying to import that is not working?

      6. You can export all artboards if you don't select anything and go to File > Export. If you want to export specific artboards, select them by clicking on their titles (holding SHIFT to select more than one), then go to File > Export;

      7. You can adjust specific corners by pressing OPTION as you change it;

      8. We have a new color picker in the works. The one that is there now is the native Mac one;

      9. "Multiple shadows" is in the backlog;

      10. "Symbols and reusable items" is in the backlog;

      11. To have your text as a resizable item, please select the Text Tool and click+drag to design your Area Text. Then you can resize it later;

      Hope it answers your questions.

Feel free to send your feature requests to UserVoice.

      Hi,

I'm not aware of us deleting any of the questions or comments.

The product UI is based on a framework at Adobe called Spectrum, that actually is exposed in a wide range of our products, across desktop, mobile and web.

We've had the opportunity to build the product from scratch and so have incorporated modern user experience best practices, ensured a good fit with the underlying OS and introduced innovative new features and capabilities.

Our focus is on creating something unique and we certainly have no interest in "cloning" anything.

Be honest with us. Is changing the name once more possible within a huge company such as Adobe? Or are you stuck with Experience Design from now on?

We're going to be investing a lot in tools and services for Experience Design at Adobe over the coming years - what you're seeing here is just the start.

There are no plans to change the name of the product.

    Hay xD

Adobe Experience Design is off to a great start XD XD Xd Thanks for taking the time to do this AMA xD

The app looks like it has decent future potential, but of course a Beta preview is just that: an early taste of what's to come. Really hope there's lots more planned. Best thing about it looks like that storyboarding/flow functionality. Excited for layers.

Comet was a much, much better name xD

My very first reaction to XD. Allow dragging left and right to change numbers in the in the property inspector instead of only being able to type numbers in there manually. My second quick reaction is that while the pale gray is fine and obviously utilitarian, it's also pretty boring. It takes minimalism to a new level. I would think that designers might like a little more color, contrast, and even larger-sized icons as a start, for the UI of a software for designing UI's.

This last comment, regarding the prototyping, this may not be the highest priority, but since you're building this from scratch to be a modern tool, I'd love to see more visual depictions of your stock transitions, for example, placing an animated gif of a blue square sliding left in the pop-up box that appears when dragging a noodle from one artboard to another, rather than just having all text with drop down menus. Maybe you have arrows to click through a gallery of animated gifs depicting transitions rather than drop-down menus. It's nice that there are point and click options, but it's still text. In the same way icons have replaced text for tools for wireframing, why not tiny animations to show options for interactions and transitions in prototyping?

      Hi Stephen,

Scrubby sliders are definitely on our backlog.

One of the main goals for the UI was to get out of the way of your design and be very quiet, to feel almost invisible. But we are definitely exploring other options since users have certain preferences, like dark UI. I definitely like your comment about options for higher contrast.

About prototyping - definitely that's where want to go, visually showing the direction of the animation seems very useful and it's easier for quick navigation.

      Thanks for the feedback!

Much of the beta feedback reflects user's hopes that Xd will be a strong competitor to other leading design and prototyping tools. I know Adobe hopes for the same. With many of the requested features likely coming to Xd months down the road, how do you plan to make the first release appealing enough to those who may instead use a competing product, and never come back to Xd?

If you want to join us for the journey, the product will offer in-app updates making it easy to get the latest features as we deliver them.

If you're happy with your current set of tools and would rather wait to take a look at Adobe XD, that's cool too - as and when we move out of preview and have a 1.0 release, that will be a strong signal as to when to evaluate the product relative to your needs.

      Thanks, Andrew (@Adobe)

      Hi Glauco,

It's a mix of different efforts:

      • Product Team highly influenced by your requests, quality research from customer meetings, observation and experimenting

      • Product Team thinking the roadmap and prioritizing features based on what we consider the best customer value

      • Engineering and Design teams creating prototypes to validate potential solutions

      • Analytics to measure what we call "User Success" defined by internal metrics

      • A lot of thinking (Product, Engineering and Design) and collaboration

      Hope it answers your questions.

Feel free to send your feature requests to UserVoice.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

First off great job guys! I like where you guys are going but would like to see more of the tools available in photoshop currently. It would be great to get measuring tools, big fan of the ruler tool in photoshop! Especially for android development a dp measuring unit would be game changer!!! I have yet to find any design (photoshop, sketch, etc.) or inspector program (creative cloud assets, avocode, etc.) that supports that measurement unit for android development.

Handing off an XD prototype to a developer.

One of the things I love about Sketch and the ecosystem (Zeplin, etc.) around it, is the seamless handoff of Sketch prototypes to developers.

And, most developers (once they get on board) love it as well.

If a developer has Sketch (most of mine do) - it's easy for them to fire up the original Sketch file and inspect element attributes of a prototype for development.

I haven't seen much here about what designer, developer collaboration and hand-off will be like in XD.

What does XD prototype hand off to developers look like for various types of prototypes - native mobile, web, etc?

Will Adobe try and own this whole ecosystem (XD + Invision type product + Zeplin type product) or partner with existing players?

      Hi Jon,

we will have an extensibility APIs in the future for anyone to build a plugin. Our file format is also easy to parse and introspect for other tools to integrate with.

It's definitely our intention to enable these workflows for designers. Some of the things in the tool (like measurements) others with partners...

It's really cool to see you've released a product specifically for UI design and prototyping! Right now in its 'preview' functionality is low. What's in the upcoming releases and the schedule for making XD a tool to use over Sketch, Silverflows, Marvel, Mira, inVision, etc...

Also .. are you going to release a migration plugin for Sketch?

Here's a link with details of our roadmap: https://medium.com/@ashorten/introducing-adobe-experience-design-cc-preview-a36300869233

Pulling from that, here's some of what we're working on:

      • Enhanced design features, including support for gradients, richer text, effects and blend modes
      • An improved color picker
      • Support for working with layers
      • More control over the sharing of prototype links
      • Authoring of scrollable content
      • Micro-interactions for prototyping
      • Real-time design preview and prototype testing on mobile devices (iOS and Android)
      • Reusability and sharing of design assets and styles, leveraging Creative Cloud libraries
      • An extensibility/API layer for plug-ins
      • Availability on Microsoft Windows 10 (release estimated for late 2016)

      Thanks, Andrew (@Adobe)

      Hi Naim,

Line spacing is already being tested and is coming in our following build. More to come soon.

I know you guys have said that Adobe XD would be available for PC late 2016, but is there an estimate to what month do you think that will happen? I've been waiting for Project Comet since you guys first announced it but PC users are being kept in the dark. Did you guys specifically launch it for only Mac users to try to compare with Sketch?

    1 point
    • Tom KrchaTom Krcha, over 7 years ago

      Hi Aaron,

we focus on both platforms, but we also want to make sure we leverage the best out of each platform from the UX perspective and also from the performance perspective. We started with Mac to begin with as we've got a lot of feedback about it from users, but Win is coming ;) Stay tuned.

the product heavily focuses on visual design and prototyping, primarily on design for smaller screens. Do you have plans to incorporate adobe reflow and extract technology into XD, or do you want people who design responsive websites to just use PS? As someone who makes websites, I would love to see a benefit in this product (or the potential in this product), but "prototyping" is not a killer feature for me.

      Hi Thomas,

we are exploring both workflows, since we have done a lot in these areas in the past.

We are also looking into extensibility, to allow for plugins to support some of them in specific ways.

I'm an UI designer. Just tried yesterday, my feelings

Love + UI is clean and lightweight, but bugs in inspector; + love the corner-radius handler + repeated group is also handy

Want + Ingredient with adobe products ( ai/ps) +linked files like Indesign; so that GUI designers can focus on the graphic asserts with ps/ai, and I can focus on interaction with xd + Easy export + one thing I love most about sketch is how easy it can be to export pngs. + Symbols + makes life a lot easier to reuse symbols + More animation

Using shared libraries would be awesome, especially if you improved the way they're shown (more options for ordering with colors, larger quick view for picking items from a pattern library—think spacebar preview in Mac Finder).

      Hi,

You can bring content in easily from Photoshop, Illustrator and Sketch. I'd recommend taking a look at this article from Joan on our team: https://t.co/uRg8phTHpA

Soon we'll be providing support for Creative Cloud libraries, which will provide even more ways to move content between XD and other Adobe tools.

If you have specific suggestions for integration then please do let us know over on our feature suggestion site: http://adobexd.uservoice.com/

I tried XD for some time now but I have to admit that this tool like it is now, it's not usable at all. At least not for website prototyping. There are several issues and lack of basic features. I'm actually shocked that adobe decided to deliver the software in this state.

I have using prototyping toll for 3 years. I try a lot of tools. I liked page flow in Adobe XD. Good experience to see all pages in Adobe XD. It should be ui kits(material desing, ios and windows) in Adobe XD. I dont want to desing in XD. I only want to place kits to make a protype faster
