It's just not so damn black and white. I can't speak to lack of diversity in the SF design community but the comments on "dribbblization of design" are just so superficial to me.
It's not always about being different. It's also about converting. Familiarity and convention convert. Converting users makes money. Design needs to make money at the end of the day.
The best designs build on convention and try something different. If you're making something for yourself, go ahead. Be crazy and different and "whimsical." If you're making something for a business, it better convert. You aren't an artist.
I don't usually enjoy these types of articles, although this one was somewhat more thought out than others.
