Let's Critique Each Other's Work

over 7 years ago from , Freelance Product Designer

I want to get design feedback on the regular from fellow designers.

I believe great critiques will lead me and others to making better work.

So I'm organizing a recurring critique session here in SF. My goals for the group:

  • We practice giving people the context they need to critique our work (user goals, business goals)
  • We build relationships with other designers over time
  • We see each other's work evolve
  • We trust each other with our hardest problems

I want to try this for one month, meeting once per week.

Great idea. We've been doing this internally for a couple of weeks now. A couple of things we've noticed, that might help you guys out:

    • context is key (like you've said): What is the problem you're trying to solve and what were the decisions you've made that led you to this solution?

    • Decide at what stage you want to show the work. To soon and you might not get the best feedback, too late and you might get too much feedback which makes you want to start over :P

    • During the critique, give every attendee the possibility to write down critiques for themselves before talking about them, put them on sticky notes on the design or something, and then talk about the critiques on the notes. It gives the session focus.

I've been looking for something like this for a while now. I'm absolutely awful at self-critique (though not for any egotistical reason - simply because I haven't developed the skills required to self-analyse this early in my career) and this'd help a great deal.

    I've signed up!

Provide data. Without that, you will hear only opinions.
